how difficult it is for someone with no outboard repair experience to change an impeler of a 100 hp johnson 87 engine. I do have the manual but is it hard to do?

3 just remember to line up the copper pipe when you put the LU back on.

That would be the water feed into the engine.

not that difficult just follow the manual,the only part that you might have a little trouble with is disconnecting the shiftshaft other than that line up the water tube.

Well, just broke the screw of the anode. Guess I went from 3 to 10. Now what?? I only have 1/4 of an inch of the exposed screw and no way to get a wise grip in the anode hole. I tried to use a 5mm socket by hitting the screw but it slips when I turn it. Any suggestions other than burning this old engine

When you say anode screw, are you talking about the screw that goes up through the trim tab? Did you twist the head off of it? If ya did, go ahead and drop the gear case. It'll be easier to deal with later.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

No Hooty, not that bolt, theres a bolt that hold a zinc anode in the lower unit just 3 inches behind the trim tab. I think its holding the LU because it wont drop. Should I use a Propane torch or just beat the heck out of it with a hammer.

If the head broke off the screw, shouldn't the anode fall down? Or is it in a pocket and installed from the side? Either way, the lower unit should drop if the head busted off. If not find/borrow a small grinder, may be pneumatic for that size (small) job. Plenty of old posts (do search) about "Shift rod disconnecting" and water pumps, you can get to the screw to disconnect shift rod with 1/4 knuckle socket. Realign screw/shift rod with coat hanger. Good luck and keep this post going till you're done.

I took out the broken bolt, no problem with that.<br />My question now is the last part of the impeler instalation uses a o-ring .856ID x .139 does that go all the way down the shaft. My kit did not include that part. Is it needed??

Don't know squat about the dimensions but there should be a groove at the base of the splines on the top of the driveshaft that takes an o ring. It is an attempt to keep water from entering the fit between the crankshaft and the driveshaft. Make sure you put some marine grade grease on the splines.

Well, its all put together now, except for the o-ring, lets see what happens when I turn it on tomorrow.

but do not grease the top of the shaft, cant remember the technical term (hydro?) but it will exert downward force on the drive shaft (after you reinstall the lower unit bolts) and could cause premature failure.

I turned the engine on and she squirts water all over from the mating surface of the lower unit. Bolts are as tight as I could adjust. Is this normal after impeler work or will time the salt will seal the squirts.

Bouner....if you are running on "ears" or flushettes, some water may squirt out between the mating surfaces. Just make sure the engine is getting the water. If it is, she should not overheat. If it does not overheat and runs good, then a big congrats on the job.<br /><br />Keep us posted.
