Re: On board battery charger installation

OK, from the start, its really essential that every boat that has a battery also have a battery switch of some sort. You simply must have a way to remove the source of power in the event of a dead short nder the cowling of your engine.

With that as the basis you can add a charger easily. Mount it in a dry spot even if it is a water proof model. Run the negative lead from the charger to the negative on the battery and the positive lead to the hot side of your battery switch. Make sure the AC side is safely wired and try to keep it in a dry area too.

From there if you want a DC system you run a suitably heavy line from the output side of the battery switch up to the console. At the console it will connect to a fuse box or breaker panel which will, in turn, feed whatever devices you install in your boat. Pretty straight forward actually.

Thom

My onboard charger is connected directly to the battery.

Also on the battery is a quick disconnect, which leads to the trolling motor.

Thats it.
