Bonding my plywood transom to the fiberglass vs resin? After being advised on using gorilla glue for laminating my two 3/4" pcs together, thinking that stuff would be good to glue the wood to the fiberglass. Its thicker than resin, waterproof, expands 2 to 3x its size filling voids better, and cheaper than epoxy resin.<br /><br />The transome piece is 8' x 3' which is a good size piece to coat with resin and then clamp and screw it into place before it sets up. Plus the room to work with is very limited in the bilge. With the Gorilla Glue, it will give me more time to work with it. Of course I plan to glass everything over once the wood is bonded to the fiberglass hull.<br /><br />Good idea or bad?

Gorilla Glue is the best one part glue i have ever used BUT have really never tested how waterproof it really is <br /><br /><br />tommays

tommays, I glued two scrap pcs together about 18" long. I only glued 2" at one end of them. Pulled it apart like a wishbone. Wood failed, came apart at the lamination.<br /><br />I think it will work, the wood I'm putting back in will be totally sealed vs the bayliners lack of glassing. Plus there is a lot of hardware that is bolted thru the transom. I'm going to glass around the plywood where the outdrive goes through also. Previously, it was exposed. By the looks of the rot that it had, that is where the intrusion begun.

I have found Gorilla glue to be strong and water resistant, but I think it is very difficult to work with. I swear that it expands to more than 2-3 times its volume - if you can't clamp the hell out of the joint, it will actually force the two pieces being joined apart. And then it oozes out of the joints while curing, creating an ugly mess.

I'll have ways to clamp all of it down, but it will take about 15 to 20 minuets. I wouldn't have that time with the 2 part systems. I'm going to try to find GG's website and ask them about this type of application. Thanks........SS

Thanks alden, that pretty much is proof in the pudding. I can't see how it wouldn't work for my tansom. With all the thru hull fastners and outdrive holding it together plus it being glassed in, it ain't going anywhere. <br /><br />The factory stuff has lasted for almost 30 years with less than perfect workmanship for a quality job. By the next 30 years rolls around, I'll be 80 and probably more concerned about my powered wheel chair.

Make sure you dampen one of the pieces of ply with water per the label instructions (both pieces for hardwoods). Gorrilla glue needs humidity to work.

Anything made to glue gorillas together must be good stuff.

JB I leave it to you to catch two Gorillas and clamp their whoesy whatits together long enough to test this out. <br /><br />Personally you can get an epoxy that takes over an hour to start curing. Plus you only need 1 type of glue and it will not expand and you will not need to "wet" the wood first.
