I have these aluminum plattens that have heating elements in them. They weigh about 60 pounds each. The scrap yard will only give me about 3 cents a pound in the contaminated aluminum.

I was thinking about building a fire and toss them into it. Would the aluminum puddle up in the ashes? I have 7 of these things which would come out to about 490 pounds. I would like to get the 40 cents plus per pound, but not sure if this idea will work. Guess I could try one and see.

Any thoughts? Sawing out the elements would take way too long. These plattens are 18"x18"x1".

Re: ? on scrap aluminum

It will if you make a hot enough fire. Lots of hot coals. Maybe make some kind of grate above the coals to hold the aluminum. Charcoal BBQs work great for this... :)

I just Mix it into a larger lot of Other Aluminum Stuff...........

I don't know what a platten Is,.......
What Else is it made of ??? Other Metals ?? Plastics ??

Try another scrap yard. OR a foundry that would smelt them down into ingots.

Hi Bondo, These plattens are the upper part of a clamshell grill. We don't flip burgers anymore, we cookem from both sides at the same time to ensure a properly cooked burger. Some of these would still work, but due to them being a little out of specs is enough for the company to replace them. They wanted me first to rebuild them, but I just can't find the time to do it. So to the scrap yard they go.

After all the stainless is removed, all that is left is the aluminum with cast in calrods for the heating elements.

Thanks.... ;)

Some of the aluminum may puddle, but some of it will burn off also. Stay away from the smoke.

There was a place here I would take tranys and other stuf to, they would smelt it then weigh it and pay top price. EPA got them and they moved to Ark. a bit too far for me to drive. but there may be a place near you, just have to call around.

SS, in East Liverpool, OH is Waste Technologies Industries. When it was built in the early 1990's it was the largest hazardous waste incinerator in the world. I don;t think they take stuff retail, but you may find out how they would dispose of something like this.
