Onboard 2 cyl oil usage

I bought a 1984 mariner 150 and the old owner never used the onboard gas tank or the onboard 2cyl oil tank, he just pre mixed Jerry cans and ran off that. My question is, if I go back to the onboard tank, how does the engine know to pull oil from the reservoir? Do I have to tell it?

Why not stick with premix on that motor. The oil injection does not have a good reputation. Built in tanks can also hold premix, with no issue.

But will it not pull oil from the onboard tank still if I premix in the tank?

Normally you would remove the oil pump shaft and reroute the fuel line to eliminate the oil pump.

And if I want to leave it all stock for now, how do I check oil pump, flow, and operation?

A service manual will give a spec on oil flow at certain RPM and time.

I'd play it safe and fill the motor's oil reservoir, and use a small premix gas tank. This way you can monitor the oil reservoir to ensure the lube system is working and drawing oil. That 35 year old oil pump has been running dry. Maybe not a good thing for the pump. Or the PO bypassed it for a reason...like it's not working.

Run it like this for only as long as it takes to verify the oil level is dropping. Else you could foul your spark plugs.

BTW. My neighbor bought a used 40 hp Mariner with oil injection. The pump failed his second time out and trashed the motor. Now he has a 25 hp Merc.....with premix.

Seems yours has been running fine with an empty oil reservoir on premix. Top off your onboard gas tank with full gallon amounts and add oil to the correct premix ratio for your motor. http://www.premixcalculator.com/ .Or use the chart on the oil bottle.

I wouldn't trust a 35 year old oil injection system that hasn't been used in forever. I immediately removed the oil system on my 92 Mariner 150 when I bought it a couple years back. I feel much safer with premix, little smoky at idle but that's fine by me.
