Clams
I have been asking this question for EVER.
Do you know what paint schemes they used for various year Mercs ? I have been trying to figure this out for ages. I am conversant with S/N's as my Australian Merc has a No starting with 8* Whereas USA are 4,5,6 Europe is 9 Canada is 7.
My 4 Cyl 50 Aussie Merc (8055598) has light/dk blue stripes and silver "Mercury" red "50" and ADI (No dizzy)and a one pce Wrapper cowling.
Not what you would describe as a "Tower of power" but I reckon it's 80-81 as the 82 had the same scheme with white text. What does your experience tell you ?
I'm not as good with decals... <sigh>

I know 83 / 84 was the dreaded "brown stripe" and that one looks to be right before that. I'd say "very early 80's" and since most of the parts cross over, not worry about being off by 1 year.

-W

Further - ADI apeared in 1979 on the inline 6's so by the early 80's the little guys had it too.

-W

Ya that's my Merc. That (Four Winns)boat was hit by drunk car and I bought a new boat last season, and rigged that Merc onto it.

It's a 2000 Seaswirl Bowrider with all the options. It goes 47mph with that motor at about 58k. The Phantom Mencace II

I've been meaning to have Lee update my pics - if I ever think of it.

-W

Re: One for Clams.

OK - I used this as momentum and submitted the new pics to Lee.

The boat was named the "Phantom Menace" because of the unregulated overcharging issue. It started life with a 1962 Merc 1000 on it, marketed by Mercury in the day as "The Mercury Phantom".

Since it had an older points and condenser ignition, when the voltage rose, the condensers would break down and ignition would stop. This of course always happened *way* out on the water after the battery recovered from starting it up. So, while I was hunting for this "strange intermittant electrical problem" the phrase was spoken: "Mercury Phantom my a$$!! A Phantom Menace is more like it!!"

And a name was born.

-W
