Re: One man bad luck is another mans treasure !!!

I have a 1978 Alumicraft Jon Boat. built in 1981 by my gran dad.

I have many ideas for my jon boat....
my grand dad.. owned this boat since its new.. along with the
motor thas currently on it..... 33hp Johnson.
I plan on this winter a COMPLETE OVER HAUL of the entire boat..
it was 1981 since this boat was new.. when he built it.....he did this
with Wood... I on the other hand will be using Aluminum ( all Aluminum )
The transom is in perfect shape the boat has been in the garage
the entire time..... but after all this time its ready for a REBUILD......
so I will be gutting the entire BOAT.....
1.) adding all new Aluminum structure I TIG WELD.....
2.) making the decks some what bigger....
3.) adding more structure to the nose making it longer and giving more
room to add the trolling motor at an angle like new Bass boats...
4.) Building the Transom Up..... for the Newly Rebuild MOTOR..
5.) I have a custom ideas for a new side steering pod....
6.) a Custom Live well that is as wide as the entire boat....
I Fish for Catfish Mostly and will be doing some Tourny's next year.
so I will need a large live well... they catch 60 lbs cats out of the
OHIO RIVER.... so I need a large live well.....
7.) I have a custom Trailer that my gran dad made... I have NEW fenders already and the Steel Stock for step sides with Aluminum Diamond plate like the new bass boats.. I also Have all NEW LED lights for the trailer.
this rig will be all new come next spring .
I plan on having a Build thread.... for the boat as well as the rebuild for the motor.. here are some pics......
Ohhhh.. I also have custom Hildabrand Wheels for the trailer once I get that far... lol...

Look Team dont let any one get you down. Your purchase is a good one. Even if you cant salvage the motor the extra parts alone will help you recoup your cost and even make you some money before parting out the motor. Ive seen lower unit housings alone for these go for a $500.00. The starter in good used condition can bring you $300.00 when a new one cost over $500.00. Your purchase was a great one! Good luck either way.

if he bought it to part out, he could do very well over the course of time selling off pieces..but if he goes the rebuilding route, he has to have $700-800 worth of expense ahead and a lot of time and maybe headache, with an unknown result.......I have two motors apart right now, one is a 70 hp...

lots of unexpected pitfalls layed in wait for me...

good luck

Of course money is an issue.... HELL I AM NOT RICH ... lmao.....

but I am not going to know whether or not its worth it until
I get into it..... as of right now I am prepared to spend upwards
towards 1400.oo total... so with that budget I am sure I can make
this a NEWLY running motor again.

Well, I believe your rebuild can be done at a reasonable cost, if you take the time to do your research and shop around for your parts. I think you can do it, for FAR less than $1,400. Fortunately, there is a huge supply of parts out there for your motor and often times, you'll see a variation of prices. Shop carefully and patiently and you should be able to do it for a lot less than you think.

Re: One man bad luck is another mans treasure !!!

siezed motor...best to assume you are:
boring and honing all three $120( drop off, no mail)

power head rebuild kit $500
carb rebuild kits $150
rusted -broken bolts $50
paint $25
gasket sealant -compound $30
special tools=?????
TIME=?????

hopeing it all works=???

if you budget is $1400 and you paid $400

seems like a no brainer to buy a motor already running for $2000

and do no work!!!

if you can get away with redoing it right, for less than $750...you got a good deal i think

good luck
