Hi..when I have my 1994 225 idling with the cowl and carb cover off, the upper right carb butterfly pops and spits about every 5-10 seconds. I think I remember reading once this might be a reed problem? The only one that does it is the top right one. thanx

G,day
Could be one of a number of problems.
sounds like the carby is running lean, I would strip the carbys and clean, reassamble. If it still spits then try richening the fuel mixture. I think that this model had adjustable idle jets.

i also have a225 merc.it leaked oil out that carb it was a bad reed it now spits off the oil return lines to check for bad reed hold a 1inch wide by 6or8 inchlong piece of paper in front of that carb it should suck it in toward the carb if it blows out it is a reed problem.mine was easy to do.also whaley was right alean mixture can cause a spit i think the speck is 1.25-1.75 turns out good luck
