Re: one question

I agree with Deputy Dawg. Sounds like water in a hole to me. Why would timing cause the starter to stop cranking? If it was the battery wouldn't you get the famous clicking sound after that first push? Check the dipstick for anything yucky right after you shut it down. The water could be draining out of the hole after you let it sit.

Re: one question

For my money I am still betting on the bad connection... <br /><br />Seen it so many times... Customer has very much the same complaint. They always think they have checked the connections... We go through the connections and the guy never has another problem... Happens 2 dozen times a summer!

Re: one question

Let's hope so. I just get confused about what sounds like a heavy load on the starter. But I am a self professed, electrical system idiot. Negative is the minus sign, right?

Re: one question

But it will turn over 1 time then act as if it has a dead battery. After that the starter will engage the flywheel but not turn the engine over. <br />The cause of this should be easy to locate. The solution may be a little harder to get to. Let us know what you find so we know if we were right.

Re: one question

O.K. everyone, a few questions regarding all the suggestions. First off there is no two minute mystery. A two minute restart the engine is COLD. A twenty minute restart the engine is HOT. It makes no difference upon restart, HOT OR COLD, it's the same. After three or four attempts at restart the battery is down to where I have to stick the charger on it. After approx. an hour it will restart as if there was never a problem. If this was a bad connection it would not be so repeatable. Same if it were the starter. It's not the counter-balance weights in the distributor since the motor runs perfect when running. It doesn't backfire or act as if's it's trying to. Would the weights stick to the point where the engine would not turn over? If it were water in one of the cylinders, would it evacuate the cylinder in an hour? This I don't know. Put a new battery in less than a year ago but am thinking this all points back to the battery. Have no way of checking the battery under load. Thanks to all who have offered suggestions. Will post the answer once I find it. Once again thanks to all.

Re: one question

Most (if not all) battery sellers should be able to load test your batt, or stick it in your car and run it for a week and see what happens.<br /><br />Aldo

"After three or four attempts at restart the battery is down to where I have to stick the charger on it."<br /><br />your battery is flat.. duff alternator or duff battery.. <br /><br />all very easy when we have the facts.. the battery dosnt act as if its dead.. it is dead.. shame u have only just mentioned this.. he he<br /><br />an hour on charge is just enough for u to keep repeating the process of four engine starts then a flat battery.. <br /><br />trog100

Re: one question

Load testing is the only way to be sure that the battery has the oomph to do the job.<br /><br />
Have no way of checking the battery under load
Put a voltmeter on the battery and watch the voltage when you turn the starter over remove the lanyard so it wont start. If it falls below 9.6v change the battery. Before you do the test make sure the battery is at least 75% charged. <br /><br />As you have ruled out bad connections / wires / starter it seems there is only the battery and water in the cylinders left. When it next happens take out the spark plugs if it spins fine and flings out water you have your answer.

Re: one question

Had the battery tested yesterday evening. It tested good. Will put vlt. meter on and test while cranking as suggested. How do I test the slave solenoid? If I pull the starter does anyone have any tips to make easier since it is so difficult to get to. Thanks everyone.

Re: one question

Try a search on 'slave' or 'assist' solenoid in this forum. Testing methods have been outlined several times...
