Only at WOT!!

I have an '88 OMC Cobra with a SBC 5.7. The engine is freshly rebuilt last year and the u-joints, gimbal bearing, and u-joint bellows have just been replaced 2 weeks ago. I can hear a noise that is very hard to describe ONLY at WOT. If I back it off just slightly (say from 4600 rmp to 4500-4550) it goes away. The noise is not repetitive (fairly sporatic). It is not a knock, almost a high speed jiggling noise (for lack of better description).

The only thing I can think of that reminds me of this noise is when I used to pull a tube behind an outboard and the cable hookup to the boat had a wheel on it to allow it to go from side to side. As you would turn the thing would move on the cable 2 ft really fast and make a similar type sound (that may have only confused everyone :-(

Anyway, can anyone think of what it might be as it is only at 100% WOT??? This may not be related, but at WOT everyonce and awhile it will miss, but this doesn't necessary coincide with the noise and is most likely just worn points which I will be replacing in the next week or so. Timing is set correctly. It seems to come from the port side of the engine compartment but that is me listening to it by myself from the driver seat at 48 mph...

It wouldn't be a good idea to rev the engine that high when not in gear, right....?

Thanks!

No, & it may be (probably)something that will only make noise under load...
Get someone else to drive & try to locate it....JK

I think it is the flux capacitor! :D ;) Seriously, I think the only way you will be able to pinpoint the sound is like JK suggested.

I listened to everything in the engine compartment really carefully in the driveway on muffs (at fast idle). I think I can hear a little noise coming from the alternator. Do I risk hurting anything if I take the alternator belt off and run at WOT out on the lake for just a short time to see if the noise goes away? Thanks!

if it aint the atl. and you notice that its comming from the bell housing area, well its more likley the coupler. i had the same "undescribable" noise and thought it was the alt. but it was the coupler. hope its your alt!!! the noise i had was best described as a can of rocks shaken underwater... kinda..

I really think it is coming from the alternator, but I can easily find out for sure if I can run it at WOT with the alternator belt off.... I just want to make sure this won't hurt anything (it would just be for a short time < 5 min)?? Thanks again!

Re: Only at WOT!!

I am planning to take the boat out tonight and run it quickly at WOT with the alternator disconnected to see if the noise goes away... I would just like to have someone confirm that this will not ruin anything? Thanks!

It shouldn't ruin anything....
However, if that belt turns the water pump on your engine & you have a raw water system, you will overheat rather quickly....
Beware the temp. gauge ;) .....JK

I think Bondo brings up a real concern...
Tune up the engine and check the timing and the timing advance before proceeding.

What color do the current sparkplugs look like?

Re: Only at WOT!!

Kagee, I have just replaced the spark plugs. The timing at idle is dead on. I will try to check the advance timing... please tell me if this makes sense.

Measure the circumference of the dampener and divide by 10 (this would be the distance to 36 degrees). Then measure from the exisiting timing mark that distance and scribe a line. Rev the engine to ~3000 and check timing. The newly scribed mark should be very close to the 0 degree mark on the tab on the timing chain cover... Is this the best way to check the advance timing with only a conventional (non adjusting) timing light? Full advance should have occured at 3000 rpm, right? And should full advnace be 36 degrees? Thanks for all your help.

Anyone agree or disagree with the method I mentioned above to measure full advance timing?? Thanks!

I would rent a good timing gun from the local parts store. The good timing guns will tell you your advance on a digital display.

My advance is 33degrees at 2000rpm. But I have a straight 4, not a V8. I would reference a manual for the right numbers.

Shawn

Re: Only at WOT!!

Ok, my manual calls for 8 degrees at 800 rpm and 29 degrees at 3000 rpm. I got an adjustable timing light and it looks like i am at ~8 (maybe 9) degrees at 800 rpm, and 27 degrees at 3000. I never get the last 2 degrees. This shouldn't cause any problems should it?

I also disconnected the alternator and still could detect the noise I have been hearing which I would now describe as more of a clicking noise (but not repetitive, more erratic). I also believe that this noise and the missing at WOT are related.

What does detonation sound like?

Can work ingnition parts cause this type of noise and or detonation (points, rotor and cap).

I have new plug wires and spark plugs and plan to do the points, rotor, and cap this weekend.

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Only at WOT!!

Just a thought, but be sure to check your fuel/water separator for any signs of H2O. At WOT a small amount of water going through the carb would make a noticable noise through the exhaust, at the drive which would me mostly out of the water, may also explain the miss.
Just my $0.02

Re: Only at WOT!!

I had a miss at WOT in my '88 OMC. It was rust in one of the 50 amp fuse holders. Have you checked those?

No I have not. In fact, I am not even sure where they are at? Where should I look for these, I will check to make sure there is no rust. Thanks!

Look at part# 42 here:
http://www.dougrussell.com/partscat...3,544,545,546,547,548,549,550,551,552,553,554

I have a 2.3l and it has 2...it looks like yours has 1, but there is a 20 amp fuse (#70).

It's inside a rubber fuse holder (#41) and held together by a clip(#30) It comes off of the main wiring harness.
