Re: Only one gear oil plug????

so the drain plug is on the skeg?

Think Skeg is damaged and so previous owner sandwiched it between two plates. Seems to thin to hold a drain plug and there aint any plug between the plates and the box!

Arrrgh!

Assuming its been welded over, can someone indicate onmy photo where roughly it should be?

Underside of gear box body, front starboard side? - roughly where gray paint is showing through?

Just to check it out since nobody can find the proper model number. Remove the prop. and see if there is a drain plug back there......????

"B" series was made in Belgium.

That model number makes sense....140 HP...there should be some extra suffixes though for full options/config details.

As far as the pics the OP posted, wouldn't these be drain plugs....(yellow highlights).

Ok, plates removed.

Skeg has a bad crack in it about mid way down. No leaks or oil issues as Skeg is solid. Plates have been attached to support Skeg and stop it snapping off.

Nothing to see either on Skeg or underside of gear casing.

Still stumped!

Re: Only one gear oil plug????

Tim Frank - Thanks this is the closest i think i've gotten to finding out where the engine comes from
Details on the transom plate are.....

"Model number is BM 140 A
Year 1996
Serial number G 04178749" Thats it

Engine is a 4 cylinder 2 stroke and seems same as BJ130TLEDM from what i can see.

I've been looking in the area marked by your yellow circles. No bolt in the bottom circle and no obvious fill / cover either!

OK, the bottom circle is about where the drain plug should be.
When i first looked at your pic I was sure that there was a plug head there....but i just enlarged the image and it is shadow and illusion...

I "think" the plugs are magnetic and the housing is cast Al. So you might try "fishing" for the plug with a small and powerful magnet. It might have just been covered with Bondo or fairing compound for some unknown reason.

As has been said, there WAS a drain hole there when it was made!

You could also try just a bit of judicious and careful excavation with a scribe to see if there is a soft area there where that filler might be.

Wow that is weird... whoever owned that motor before you def did some funky stuff to that LU. Maybe it's worth just replacing the whole LU? You really need to get into it to see if there's any water or metal shavings as I'm sure you know. Just curious have you purchased this motor recently? If so maybe you should contact the previous owner and see what he says about the situation.

Re: Only one gear oil plug????

I have already tried scraping and probing - no evidence of any reapair! All metal. If you guys are sure thats where it should be then i'm going to sand that ara down to original metal finish.

I'll try looking ion exhaust once the propo is off first.

Previous owner will probably not have any info on engine. It seems to run fine and it looks to be original (with the exception of plate repair). I've removed the upper drain plug and some oil has come it. It looks a bit black but no obvious signs of water sitting on the oil.

Would just like to change the oil for peace of mind.

Thanks guys - keep the ideas coming!

The water will be on the bottom if there is any in the oil. Oil is less dense than water.

Re: Only one gear oil plug????

Just to close this thread!

I've checked in the exhaust behind the prop and there are 5 bolts which i assume hold the gear mechanisim in place.

I've since rubbed down the gear casing in the region of the yellow circles and guess what - i found my missing bolt! It seem that it has indeed been coverd by some liquid metal and a thick layer of paint. I had to really sand it back before i could see it as there was no obvious signs.

Anyway all good now and thanks for the advise. Having the confidence to look in a particular area as a result of everyones advice certainly helped. For a while there i though i had a unique oil filling / draining system!

Making some progress now in chasing down the model spec also - as a result of posts. Any other help on model number would be greatly apprecited!

Thanks guys - great forum!
