So I have a 9.9hp 77 Johnson that will not start and idle unless it is fully choked and then when I hit the throttle it dies out or if I push the choke back in it dies,,....

and then I have a 91 25hp johnson that will start and run and idle just fine with no joke but when I give it gas it dies, but then if I choke it like half way it will run wide open if I'm giving it full throttle as I start to choke it, doesn't make sense?

Re: Only running wide open when choked...

hi.
today i put apart my carb in 9.9
at the end of slow speed needle is a chamber, covered by welsh plug.
end of slow speed needle is sticking out of wall.this needle alows to flow fuel from the botom of carb bowl.
in the botom of chamber are 3 holes.
at idle (twist handle at idle) trotle leaf is opening only 1 hole.
so when piston make suction from carb, its sucking air by venturi throath and fuel threw 1 hole from slow speed chamber.
so if fuel pasages leading to chamber is dirty piston cant suck enough fuel.
if you push out chocke leaver, you increas suction and lower amount of air to amount fuel(fuel flow is decresed by dirt in pasages)
so:
dirty fuel pasages or weak compresion is the problem

Sounds like you have some carbs to overhaul. Make sure to remove all orifices and core plugs and clean all passages.
