Only the most perfect family boat launching event EVER!

Okay. So I'm on the way to go fishing in Pensacola Bay. With me were the wife and the daughter, both of whom LOVE fishing. My 11 year old boy stayed home. He usually complains bitterly the entire time, get irrationally frustrated if he doesn't catch the perfect fish on the first attempt, and usually turns the day's fishing trip into a miserable experience for everyone. HE HATES FISHING! I don't like letting him weasel out of family outings, and I think he needs to work on being patient anyway. However, the wife let him stay home and I wasn't in the mood for his bad attitude.

On the way there, we reviewed our roles. I'm trying to train my 14 year old daughter to help with launching and recovering so that the wife can stay home if she wants. I had this mental image of the soothest, quickest, most yelling-free boat launching we've ever had.

I backed the trailer into the water until the bunks were just covered with water and disconnected the wench strap. Daughter was manning the bow line. Wife had the stern line. Perfect. At the last minute, I decided to try out my trailer's tilt mechanism because the last time, I had to back the boat so far in that water was at the bottom of my bumper.

I popped the latch, jumped back in the truck, and put the truck in reverse. That action caused the boat to slide backwards the tip up. I guess all that silicon spray I've been putting on the carpet made 'em slick as owl poop.

It only slid back a couple feet, but the lower unit hit the concrete. The outdrive was all the way up at the mechanical stops, so I don't think I damaged anything, except for boogering up the bottom edge of the skeg a little. The sound it made made me wince, though.

Since I couldn't feel any cracks and didn't see any oil in the water, we pressed on. Boat ran fine all day. Didn't take on any water at all.

I joked to the old lady who mans the boat launch for the city, "Boy, I'll bet you see a lot of interesting stuff.":p

We had the most awesome fish tacos made from fried croaker. Yum!:)

Are these outdrive assemblies tough enough to take an occasional screw up like I just mentions? Any areas you think I need to inspect more closely?

A friend of mine was launching and backed up with the drive down. The skeg snapped off. Maybe it is meant to be a week point before damaging anything else but not sure.

The problem was obviously that it was your daughters job to undo the "wench" strap.;) Nice to see the ol 470 running well.:D

LOL! I had my boat roll off the friggin trailer at the p.o.s. (i.e. free) launch while backing down the ramp a couple weeks ago. The launch is so shallow, the skeg dragged on the concrete pad for a few feet. No damage though.

Glad to see your trusty 470 is running good.

LOL. I tried to find some way to blame my daughter, like, dammit Molleigh you're holding the bow line the wrong way!!! But I wound up blaming the trailer!:D

It's always something!

Last time we went tubing, I was pretty much at W.O.T. (+/- for break-in) for five or six hours. Burned $50 worth of gas. No overheating at all. Good charge on both batteries. Starts easily the first time. Looking forward to the mild air temps of Oct/Nov/Dec.:D

I hate to say this and sound like I/we are bragging, but I agree. Sept-Nov is prime skiing and boating season for us in the Houston area. Might have a good weekend or two in December, then stay dry for Jan and Feb, ready to launch again in March around Spring break.

Sad that there are a bunch of guys up north pulling out to prevent frozen blocks right now :(

But then it is sad that there are 3 months or so in the summer where we can have the boat out, but if you are not physically body-in-water, it is so hot and humid that you cannot enjoy yourself.

So I guess it all evens out...

None of us 470 guys are worried about freezing blocks ;)

Nate,

Don't give up on your boy. He will grow into it just like mine did. Anyway, now that the
BP Oil well is history you are in a perfect location to introduce him to real deep sea fishing.

Take him on a charter boat or headboat trip into the Gulf. They often go quite a distance from shore and can catch great fish. The captain always wants everyone to have a great time -so your son may find the trip enjoyable. Too keep sibling competition managable (and cost down) you may want to leave the fairer sex at home - at least for the first trip.

Enjoy the winter boating. We are scheduling to pull out next month and put the boat on the "hard". We use a triaxle trailer for winter storage.

Yes. I had the opportunity to go out on an charter boat a few years ago. We caught our limit in red snapper in about an hour. I caught a 3' amberjack. It was what I imagine reeling in an elephant would be like.:D

Leaving the fairer sex at home would cause a mutiny. I hope I have the money to take her for her 15th birthday or 16th birthday. That would be the best present I could get for her.

Attached picture: Who looks like the fisherman? This was in 2005. She was already a veteran.

Last week we were at the ramp and a guy with family was loading a jon and as his wife pulled forward the boat and the two kids (16-18 yr olds) slid off the rear putting the O/B firmly into the sand at the bottom of the ramp. I ran over and levered down on the front to get it on the bunks and he attached his winch strap (ever so quietly) and proceeded to winch it back on the non-tilt trailer.

Talk about up-ending. I'm not sure who he blamed. I know what I thought of it.
