I am starting to get really frustrated with my motor. I have rebuilt the carburetor and put in a new power pack. And still the same problems.

Motor works great going out in the morning, and runs great all day, but when we are coming back home from the Channel Islands, CA 20 miles. It starts to happen. Number #4 Cylinder stops popping. I take out the Spark plug, and smells like fuel. Also have replaced the Fuel/Water Separator Filter before the trip. Change the coil and Spark plug wire.

I was thinking it could be the little Check Valve from the Air Silencer to #4 Cylinder intake?

Also would the Fly Wheel, or time Base have anything to do with it?

Thanks in Advance for any help with the matter. ;)

Also Compression is 120 in all Cylinders.

You need to find out if you still have spark on that cylinder when it happens. A induction type timing light will work for that.

so if there is NO spark then it is the timing base, sparkplug wire, coil or power pack?

And if not then is it still the carb? maybe the float?

The #4 spark plug wire could be shorting out to cowel cover.

Clint,

Thanks, Yes i have switch out all plug wires. I was getting shock from the engine cover before I switched them out.

Still have the problem.

Did you have the problem before you switched the wires.

Test for spark, clean the coil grounding strap to that cylinder and clean the engine block where it grounds to. Also you might try switching the sparkplug wire to another cylinder to see if the problem moves.

Well it is still grounding out on the cowel cover. It is still happening to the #4!! Same thing on my evinrude 140. I had to completely remove that lockdown assembly because of it grounding out onn the one bolt. It would run great all day too sometimes untill engine accumulated some moisture under cowel and I too would be getting shocks which I finally found the reason. The lockdown bolt would press against the #4 cylinder spark plug boot. I bought new wires and bought new rubber gromet caps for bottom of lockdowns where cover rests on and I modified lockdown to where it cant ground to spark plug wire any more. It runs like a kitten ever since after finding this problem. No more pulling my hair out. If you had this problem it will not go away till its fixed. It was happening intermittently for lots of years. Good Luck!

Clint,

I will try it. I will remove the cover bolts. And test it out. Maybe use some nylon bolts instead of the ss one in there now. I will let you guys know.

Thx..

No need to do that. Wiat til its acting up and then just take the cowling off and see if she straightens out.

Ignition coils are notorious for doing what you say. They get hot and open up....hence quit supplying power to the plugs. I know you said you replaced the coil.

Not familiar with your engine. Does each cylinder have a separate ignition circuit or is there one common coil for all plugs. If one common coil forget it as if the coil is firing 3 it's obviously working.

When you get into this situation again, if possible, swap every ignition component you can from 4 to another cylinder and see if the missing follows the components. Then just a process of elimination.

Mark,

Yes, That is a great suggestion. I will do that I also was thinking it could be the power pack it has been on there since 1996?

It seem that when I put the plug wire on either number 1 and 3 cylinder engine wants to stall, but when I put the plug wire on number 2 or 4 the idle just drops.

I know that 1/3 are connected in some way and 2/4??

Johnson 112 is just a crossflow 115 motor w/o the oil injector and extra amp stats.

Mark,

I just moved over a good coil to #4 and works great. Not I just have to test it over the day and see what happens.

Question?? Do I have to redo the timing if I change the power pack. I am sure this ? has been asked before.
