Open flame near Fuel Vent?

I was wondering how far away from the fuel tank vent you need to be to operate a portable campstove.

Any thoughts?

As far as possible would work.

In an open boat I really don't think it will be a problem, it isn't like the vent is spewing fumes all the time, I wouldn't set the stove right on top of the tank but as long as there is a some distance you should be fine.

Ditto. Remember, too, that gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it tends to drop to the water. Any breeze that would blow it toward you and your stove, dilutes it to the point where it isn't combustible.

A bigger potential issue is the use of propane or butane as a cooking fuel. Just keep an eye on the flame in case it blows out, and disconnect the fuel tank from the stove when not in use.

You'll be fine. Cook up something good!

Portable grills are usually mounted past the rail so fumes will fall into the water and not the hull.......... and are normally not mounted anywhere near your vent.

My take would be opposite side/end of the boat, and upwind of the vent. If it doesn't matter, then go as far away as possible. Then again, everything on a boat (or life) involves risk. How much you are comfortable with often dictates how much fun you have!

OK, Well the only location I have for a flip out table happens to be about a foot from the fuel tank vent. If fuel vapor is heavier than air, I might just slip a hose over the vent to lower it near the waterline when cooking.

OK, Well the only location I have for a flip out table happens to be about a foot from the fuel tank vent. If fuel vapor is heavier than air, I might just slip a hose over the vent to lower it near the waterline when cooking.

Why does that seem like that may be the case here....lol

It's just me, but I'd really consider moving farther from the vent....

We brew coffee on the boat with a small LP gas burner and stay about 4 or 5 feet from the above deck 12 gallon fuel tank, but I always keep the fire extinguisher real handy while I'm cooking. Fire on boat is NOT good!
