operating temp ?

My boat used to run at 175 degrees once it warmed up and generally stayed there. It wasn't warming up so I replaced the thermostat and now it runs around 140. But moves around between 120 to 150.

What temp should it be running at and should the temp move around or stay at/near a certain temp?

Motor/drive is a 2001 VP 4.3 GL SX

Thanks
Kevin

do you have fresh water cooling(heat exchanger) or raw water cooling they use diferent thermostat temp

raw about 140

fresh about 170

depends on motor and year

tommays

Raw water cooled. I'm concerned that it's not running warm enough i.e. thermostat stuck open and the temp fluctuation is a sign of problems in the system somewhere.

Re: operating temp ?

in a pefect world it would like a car and be very steady
you sound prety good with the new stat there are to many ways that people use boats and to many diferent incomeing watet temps to have it stay at one temp as you speed up and slow down

it should on paper come up to about 150 after some time at a steady load but after you slow down the motor is working so much less that the temp will drop and could take a long time to warm up to 150 again

when i am on a warm lake at speed the drive is only in 10 inches of warm water when i stop and idle it could be in 25 inches of much colder water

tommays

Thanks tommays, I hadn't thought about it that way before. The water temps have dropped considerably here in MN and I have experienced exactly what you said with temp and load. Thanks
Kevin
