I'm considering buying a 10hp evinrude and using it as a kicker for my boat when I go offshore. It is, as the topic says, a 1960 10hp evinrude in very good shape. Real clean under the hood and supposedly runs good.

I did a search and didn't come up with much other than the talk of a weak lower unit problem for this certain era of motors. Is this a solid motor or should I stay away from it? Also, about how much does it weigh? Quick search yielded ~67lbs?

I'm sort of needing this information quickly as I have to know early in the morning whether I'm hitting the road or not because it's a drive.

Thanks a lot.

They are nice and powerful little engines that are easily maintained and fixed.Besides they are ready for remote control, which is a plus. They are quite dependable.
The bad part is that you will have to have a dedicated fuel tank using 1:24 oil fuel mix and in spite of the small size, they are thirsty compared to today's 9.9 engines.
If the regular things like compression and coils check out OK then buy it

Thanks. I'm having seconds thoughts now cause I realized the fueling/oiling issue I'll be dealing with.

Being as though my main engine is a mercury optimax that has just a fuel line going to it, I would have to carry an extra tank and I'd rather not have to do that. It seems if I want an older premix reliable engine though, I wouldn't have a choice..

I think this engine uses the pressurized fuel tank

I have a 63 10hp, with 90psi in each cylinder.
Talk about a rust bucket.

I couldn't get the lower separated from the midsection (trying to replace the water pump) and broke a hole in the side.

the tiller handle was welded on.
paint on the powerhead has deteriorated off.
Every screw nut and bolt on the thing broke off.

I really hate it.

probably good motors though.

As the other poster mentioned the 1960 10hp uses a pressurized tank unless it has been converted to a use a fuel pump. This is easily done, but may affect your decision. The 1963 model had a fuel pump as standard.

Some of the smaller motors have built in gas tanks. I have a 1957 Brooklure (Gale) 5hp with a built in tank, but it's less than 1 gallon. Don't know if a smaller motor would work for your application, but it's a thought.

The '59 did,but the '60 already had the regular pump.besides it is very easy to change the '59 to a pump instead of a pressure system.

The 1960 10 HP Johnson Seahorse did have a fuel pump. It was the first year they came with fuel pump.
