Opinion on old Volvo?

I see advertised locally, a "Volvo 1700 straight 6 engine with a 270 drive" (in a boat). Price appears reasonable by local standards. Boat looks pretty good in the photos and on a decent trailer.

Any opinions?

I assume it is fairly old as the photos show the prop as being the style that does not have the through hub exhaust.

Mostly concerned with reputation for reliability and parts availability.

Pass. Great engines in their day, but parts are non-existant and expensive. Last time I looked MANY years ago just the exhaust manifold was close to $3K. And thats a 3L, not a 1.7L. 270 drive, however, is bulletproof and parts are easily available. 270/280/290 drives never had through prop exhaust.

Agree. I think the water pumps for those are about $1000. For the price of a manifold and waterpump alone you can get another boat.

Have a great day

Rob.
