I am probably going to buy a used (demo) 2006 90hp E-tec which I am sold on. Does anyone have opinion(s) as to these motors vs. Merc, Yamaha and Honda (all 4 strokes).

Also, does anyone know the weight of my Johnson 1991 70hp?

Thanks !

E-tec is a fine motor. Be careful of the year, I have heard that some years had programming issues. Don't know if it is true or not.

The difference is in the fit and finish of the motors.
Look over a Merc and you will see the cost savings. Painted after assembly ect.....

I am not a fan of Merc by any means they are the GMC product of the boating world. Build it cheap for the masses or as Tracker says "A family boat that a Family can afford".

Yammy are top notch motors also.

As far as 2 stroke versus 4 stroke. Look up the pros and cons

If a buddy and I squared off each in our own boat and I had a fish hook in my nose tied off to his boat and he had a fish hook in his nose tied off to mine I would want us to each have Mercs.

E-TEC is now in its 4th year of production and has been proving itself reliable, quiet and economical.

Rodbolt, who is one of the nation's top Yamaha mechanics and who frequents the Yamaha section of this forum, bought an E-TEC for his own personal motor.

The one nice thing over all else is that the E-TECs are programmable and are easily upgraded as improvements come along. A 2004 90hp E-TEC can run as smoothly and efficiently as a brand new 2007 with a 15 minute software "flash" from the dealer.

90hp Etecs never had any issues, the 40/50/60hp had some issues with programing though but 98% of that is solved now too. In the 90hp class the Etec is hard to beat Power to weight wise, not sure about price though as most dealers around me are asking $$$ than other dealers. Same dealer nearby sells Evinrude and Suzuki. In the 90hp class they want 6900 for the Suzuki and 7800 for the Evinrude for the bare engines alone. It was even worse in the 70/75hp class. 5800 for the Suzuki 70 and 7100 for the Etec 75.

I've got a buddy I fish with frequently that has had a lot of trouble with his 60 Etec. Not sure if it was all programming stuff, but his biggest issue was that it didn't run well in very cold weather (around freezing or below). He also had some problems with the tiller handle. His customer service/warranty work was top notch, but too frequent.

Thanks all of you. I bought the Evinrude E-Tec 90hp and I know it was the right decision!

Etec great power and good motors. You need to be an authorized dealer to really get service or parts. There are ways to do this..but they really support their resellers. Yamaha..also quality motory. Yamaha easier to get parts for in non authorized channels.

Now...good dealer or mechanic that knows the industry...they will make both of those scream. If both motors, in my opinion, I had a mechanic that would work on either..I would choose the etec.
