I went to the old archives here and looked up evinrude 85 hps and there were no threads involving any 85 hp past 1989!!!

and then i went to the 90-93 years evinrude forum and didnt find a one about an 85 hp outboard

are they very rare...was there issues with these motors that made them un popular???

I have seen one advertised locally, it belongs to the guys father who had it rebuilt and he thinks it is in the early 90s model.

does it differ much from the 88 and 90 hp models??????

it is white...if that matters...

probably because you could buy a 90 for the same $$. get the model # to determine exactly what he has.

a few weeks ago i was thinking of looking at an 88 special form about 1990... and was told that it is the same block as the 90 ho and had a lot of torque.

is that true of the 85 hp as well??
is it the same block as the V4 88 and 90 hps?

thanks

1995 was the last year a 85hp was made. Mostof the 1993-95 were sold with the jet drive option I am told. On the same size boat you wouldnt see but maybe 1mph difference between the three engines 85-88-90. It is a crossflow and shares all the common internal parts with the 88-90-115-140hp engines. There are some differences in block porting, carbs and ignition systems in the upper hp's but pretty much the same. It is a good engine but beware as in 1973-78 it was a small bore engine (3.375) and the later are 3.500 bore. Get model to confirm year.

thanks, they must have stopped making them for a bunch of years, because I tried to verify the years using the NADA guide and they dont list any 85 hp evinrudes in the late 80s or even 1990...I saw listing for 1991-1995!

do you know if they were electric shift

i cant see the motor for a week... and the guy selling it for his father cant remember too much about it other than some basic info that was passed on to him

The only V-4's that were electric shift to my knowledge were in the late 1950's-late 1960's and these where only 50-60-75 hp engines.

Last year for hydroelectric shift (on outboards) was 1972, and it was indeed offered on the 85s.

Get the model number from the motor - I'll bet it is earlier than 1990s era...
