Opinions on Alaskan 1800

I'm interested in getting an Alaskan 1800, preferably in a tiller. I see that the tiller is only offered up to 60 horsepower, is this enough for that boat? Is that Mercury four stroke 60 a good motor? Also, how's everybody running the big tiller motors like them? I've never ran more than a 25 with the tiller, does it wear you out fast? Any opinions appreciated.

Hey Too Cheap.

I rented an 18' Alaskan with a 40HP Johnson. It was not a speedster, but had enough speed to us on Rainy Lake in Minnesota. Most people were passing me, but IMO the power was not bad.

I do have to say that the 40 can tire you out if your maneuvering, but is not a problem when going straight.

I am looking to buy an Alaskan in the next couple years and think I may go with the console, but will look at the tiller steers to see how much money the SS adds.

I have a 20' Alaskan with a side console and its great. I've had other boats with tillers and I would never go back to a tiller for the way I use my boat. If you had a special use that required a tiller that is what I would do, otherwise I would go with a console.

I have a 1890 Pro V Gary Roach edition with an 85 hp tiller. I have found when you get on plane and trim the motor the steering becomes much easier. I do not find myself wore out from operating the boat. I have seen tillers in the 150 range and they come with sterring assist units. Honda and Suzuki are two. I'm not sure what the boat is rated for. I love the tiller and the extra room in the boat. I will admit trying to dock on a windy day at times can be difficult, this is the only time I wish I had a console.
