If you are on a budget you can use Super Tech from Walmart. Many here swear by it.About $6 a gallon.

I was looking at the site that lists all the TCW3 oils and noticed a lot of oils have common manufacturing plants - and those can change from year to year. Anyway, I'd be interested in how your engine runs on the Castrol. I'm going to be running it for another 100 gallons of premix.

The tech from wal mart got a better review in oil then the other but both are good oils. I have used both but now use the tech from wal-mart.

Well, interesting - he asks about Castrol and gets mostly opinions on Walmart oils.... Anyway, I have tried a few qts. of Castrol super outboard (same as you, I bought a case). I've only run about 40 gallons of pre-mix through it but the engine seems to perform admirably - no noticable change in performance or smoke from the previous oils I'd run (Quicksilver, JohhnyRude, Pennzoil full synthetic). I like the price of the Castrol and happens to be sold at my favorite, most convenient store, so I'll probably stick with it.

LubeDude I can't believe that's all you had to say. Must've hurt. We haven't had a good oil thread in a long time. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Thanks D,
I did try it once last year & it seemed compatable to the Merc stuff I mixed it with, but now I'm going exclusive Castrol so I'll soon see how she runs on it...
I trust the brand , says on the jug, bottled & mixed in Canada, found that interesting..
Maybe it's relabeled E tec oil, cool ..LOL ;)

Re: Opinions on Castrol super outboard 2 stroke oil ?

I believe the only difference is the additives each company puts in thier product..
One thing I did notice with the pricier Merc oil is it had an " ammonia smell " to it & one time I slightly overfilled the oil tank, some dripped into the transom of my 1977 Boston Whaler & this stuff really cleaned the heck out of this old transom { with a little elbow grease }..
As matter of fact I used it to clean all the grease marks ect. on the hull's inner gunnels.
It gave it a nice clean & conditioned look, LOL.
But back to the Castrol, no I never tryed to clean my boat with it but I always liked Castrols products for my cars over the years , top shelf stuff, seems a good compromise over the 20 dollar Merc oil & the Wally world 6 dollar oil..
I hope I'm right, I put a couple hundred hours a season here on south shore long island, I'll give you a report ...

I also put a hundred or so hours on my Merc. on the south shore, & in Great South Bay. I mostly use Merc Premium Plus but I buy it in bulk, bring my own 5 gallon can, to the dealer, comes out to about $12. a Gal. that way. But I have read several reviews on TC-W3 oil, & they all should work well or they wouldn't have the Cert. But as some will say, they have met the min. standard for TC-W3. Most reviewers say it's what you feel comfortable with. Have fun, looking foward to your review of the Castrol, see you out there in the compass rose. Joe

TCW-3 certifications are the only way to know if the oil meets mfgs specs if required. Somehow, the word "minimum" seems to be used (by those who aren't certified)to mean lower standards than oils without the certification. In reality, most TCW-3 oils also advertise to meet or exceed mfg requirements. Oils without the certification advertise the same but don't have a certification to prove they even meet the "minimums". Who you going to believe...the NMMA and all the motor mfgs who spec TCW-3 or a small group of independent oil companies who spend money on advertising instead of certifications? Use TCW-3 oil and KNOW you are meeting "minimum" specifications or use non certified oil and HOPE you are meeting them.

Re: Opinions on Castrol super outboard 2 stroke oil ?

I also have bought a lot of oil in bulk (John/Ev and Merc) and it's a good way to go. Unfortunately, where I live, if I call around the best price I can usually get is closer to $15 or $16 a gallon. Which isn't all that horrible in the big picture of boating expenses. But the boat shops are all about a 40 - 45 minute round trip for me as well, and not open on Sundays or evenings. I'm hoping the Castrol turns out to be a good oil (so far so good) because it is not only a decent price, but very convenient to my house and job - also available evenings and Sundays. Not that I'm the type of guy who would need a few qts. of oil because of poor planning.

:D :D Ya, guess Im going to have to start something, Life is a bit borring latly :D :D

Actually, there is so much information on the forums about oil now that its hard to say anything new. If it says TC-W3 on the bottle, you are not going to hurt your engine in any way.

The only problem with SuperTech is that you never really know where the oil came from or who is mixing it. But even at that, it will always be TC-W3 certified, which is more than I can say about Amsoil.

Even though I dont think that there is an outboard oil in the world that could better it in a TC-W3 oil. :p ;)

LD, who cares who makes what oil, if it passes the test, and they can't change the formula without recertifying it then where's the problem..Chief ;)

Back to the bulk oil for a second, I too used to buy it in bulk {the OMC stuff } a few years ago when I docked my boat, I never really liked or trusted it being pumped out of those 55 gallon drums for some reason.. You never knew if some dingleberry would slip something in there or if it is filtered as well as packaged oil...
Maybe just being neurotic but give me the pre packaged stuff anyday..
A clogged oil screen can really be a major problem, to say the least..

I had an "incident" with my last bulk oil purchase. It doesn't have anything to do with why I'm trying the Castrol (see previoius post about convenience), but it kind of ticked me off in retrospect.

Bought 5 gallons of bulk oil in a new 5 gallon gas can. This was very early in the spring, before boating season really started. I happened to be at this particular dealer so I decided to get it (had just purchased a new 5 gallon can which was in the truck, so I also happened to have a container). The guy was taking FOREVER to get the oil. Finally came in and said he'd had to switch to a new barrel because the old barrel only had a couple gallons left in it. O.K, didn't give it any thought.

Fast forward a few months. I'd been pouring the oil into other containers to keep on board the boat. Had a couple of gallons left so I decide to fill two 1 gallon jugs so I can free up the 5 gallon can for gas. These jugs happen to be clear-ish (old Ev. oil jugs). I now notice that about 1/2 gallon at the very bottom of the original 5 gallons has a bunch of curdy/cottage cheese type stuff mixed in with it. This was not at all evident so far in all the oil I'd used. I let the curdy crap sit for a while and it settled out a little and then I poured off the clear stuff through a filter and discarded the remaining curdy stuff. Ended up wasting only about 1/3 gallon of oil. Started thinking about it and decided that the crap must have come from the bottom of the barrel, left over from the previous season (rememeber, I bought the oil early in spring, before ice-out. Didn't feel too ripped off because he'd probably over filled by at least 1/2 gallon originally (you know how a 5 gal. can can really hold about 5.5).

But, just something to think about and watch as you buy and use bulk oil. I'd done bulk oil many times before that and never had the problem. I chaulk it up to inattentiveness by the Gomer who got me the oil that day, but it was so far in the past, and I caught it without a problem, I didn't make a big deal about it.

Oh, I also haven't seen that Gomer for at least a season, so I have a feeling he wasn't a sterling employee all around.

Know your dealer! I buy mine from the same guy I bought the engine from! He is usually more concerned w/ the can I bring than I am w/ Him giving me junk, & I am very particular w/ my Merc. Joe
