Re: Opinions on Castrol super outboard 2 stroke oil ?

Yea, I know Joe. This particular dealer is the last one I'd buy a new engine from for exactly this sort of reason. I do buy trinkets and accesories from him sometimes if the price is right and I happen to be driving past. The oil "seemed like a good deal at the time" (famous last words!). Up until then, I had no idea that there was the possibility of crap in bulk oil, but there ya go.

So where do you see that I think there is a problem? I said that as long as it said TC-W3 on the bottle that it was ok. Just that some of us like to know who is making there oil.

I have always had good luck w/ my oil. At one time I was looking for a few guys to go partners w/ on a drum to split the cost, but I couldn't get enough of guys, & I didn't want to be in the oil business.

I read that the crud you sometimes see on the bottom of oil bottles { regular 4 stroke auto oil } is due to moisture believe it or not, & I believe your not supposed to shake the bottles.
Theres a website called Bobistheoilguy.com thats a great resource on all types of oils. I read it there, this was confirmed from an E mail from Castrol to the guy who started the thread & i've seen it on the bottom of Castrol's oil bottles myself, it's a black or dark residue..
I wonder if the bottom of the barrel oil from that 55 gal. drum is up to snuff, cant be any good to get that thick stuff going through your oil injection & into the engine ?

Re: Opinions on Castrol super outboard 2 stroke oil ?

Very interesting reading about bulk oil and the way it is decanted and moved around etc.
Advice that I got from an oil expert was not to leave 2xoil open or to use old oil as there are additives in the oil to inter alia clean the inside of the motor that either evaporate or dont like air or loose its effectiveness if not used within a specific time.
I use Shell Nautilus (spelled correctly??) which looks and feels just like Quicksilver and also has a strong ammonia smell when fresh. After being opened and/or poured into the outboards oil tank, the smell gets weaker by the day to such an extent that the smell is hardly noticeable after about 6 weeks if for instance stored. Proves the experts point I think.
D

Now that I got your attention LD, I just wanted to say that I saw the pic you posted of your wife and the respective bass you all caught, and I would like to say "Well done". Chief ;)

Re: Opinions on Castrol super outboard 2 stroke oil ?

Several years ago (1990) I bought a 55 gal drum of Esso/Exxon TCW oil. It was red at that time and I don't think there even a tcw2 at that time. The price was right, about $4.25 gal delivered to my shop. By the time I got to the bottom of the barrel a couple years later it had started jelling, so I ended up dumping about 4 gal. If you do the math, that is a lot of gas at 50-1, like 2500 gal. The good news is that my 1989 200 Merc is still running today. I had blown a power head in Feb/March 90 and I was in my 13th month and Merc told me to pack sand, so I sold their oil ( 5 gal) I had on hand and never have looked back. Since then I have been using Texaco and Penzoil Blend.

Penzoil seems to have a nice piece of this 2 stroke oil market.
I guess the average guy who wishes to buy a bulk 55 gallon drum has to factor in the cost of a pump , unless your running twins & or doing a few hundred hours a year, I dont think it's a good idea. You'll end up with a lot of old oil to use up over the years maybe some crud forming like gss036 ect..

That's why I didn't do it, I have the pump but who wants the drum hanging around for years. At the time I was looking for 5-10 people to split w/ right there, fresh drum get it over with & done. But it wasn't worth the trouble, if I couldn't get rid of the 55 gals. right away. So now I buy 5 gals. at a time, & that is good for me. Looks like a nice day today, wish I could use up some of that oil , but that will have to wait 'til tomorrow. Have fun, Joe

Jones, you're not to far from me. I'm between Jones & Fire Island. Maybe later I might try the Wantagh bridge. Tomorrow I'll try Fluke on the outside West of the F. I. To keep it within the guide lines I'll let you know how it ran on Bulk oil! Joe

Yes, do that i'm curious.
I tell you what though as I mentioned in this thread I believe the packaged stuff is the way to go. I got this Castrol 2 stroke stuff @ Pepboys in Baldwin for under 10 bucks a gallon but I believe all the stores carry it, love the way it runs on it so far...
Joe, ever post on Noreast.com ? Great local fishing site I post on from time to time, check it out if you havent by now..

You Guys are in my neck of the Island>>>I run out by Jones Inlet & trailer my lil 18 ft'er. :D

As far as "cheep" oil is concerned, I tried WestMarine's, and BoatersWold's house brands in my 1978 115 Johnson & they smoked alot. I switched to Pennzoil Premium Plus Synthetic Blend and could not believe the differance. Much cleaner burn, much smoother idle, and the best part was that it was only $11 at the Walmat by my folks in N.E.Pa.>>>Now every time I visit them I buy 3 or 4 gals>>>even if I dont need it, or its a winter visit.

I learned years ago, not to run any bulk oil.
I ruined a 4 stroke Honda 750 on warrenty & the factory tech told my that the additives in the bulk oils tend to settle out if its not used right away. You never know how long its sitting or what your getting.

Boilmaker,
good post, I wouldnt doubt bulk oil can have issues.
You know something funny, lived on Long Island south shore my whole life & never stepped in a Walleys world nor even know where it is near us ?
If I have a hard time getting more of this Castrol stuff then I'll try the Penzoil after your positive results

Wally world is in Massapequa mall on Sunrise. Good point though, but I'm still sure it depends on dealer turnover. How much of the bulk oil he sells. IMHO Joe BTW I fished off Tobay, & Gilgo, 2shorts Dog fish, & lots of skates, where are the Fish?

Joe, thanks for the location on Wally world, I was out this morning, 2 shorts in Reynolds ch..
Only on the water for an hour or so the memorial day fleet was out there..
Like I mentioned before for fishing info in our area Noreast.com
You do make a good point on the heavy turnover of the oil @ your marina making a big difference.
Geeze, in our area ...summertime..they can go through a couple of those 55 gallon drums a month easy average yard..

Re: Opinions on Castrol super outboard 2 stroke oil ?

Someone mentioned Pennzoil. Isn't their regular "dino" TCW3 oil multipurpose, meaning rated for water cooled and air cooled 2 strokes? My undersanding is that water cooled and air cooled 2 strokes have differing oil needs - but I have no idea if the different needs are so different that a dual purpose oil would be a poor compromise for either. Is this good or bad, or irrelevant as long as its TCW3 rated?
