Opinions on my impeller...?

I just replaced the impeller in my Alpha 1 Gen II lower unit...and this is what came out.

I am almost certain that this is the original impeller, and I am curious as to why one of the vanes appears to have a reversed set...and one of the vanes appears to have taken no set at all?

Am I wrong? Has anyone seen this before?

The impellar is offset in the housing, not in the dead center of it. Almost lookts like this thing was sitting awhile before you took it out.... and would explain the difference in the vanes.

Re: Opinions on my impeller...?

I just did my impeller 2 weeks ago on the same Alpha1Gen2 and mine looked the same way. It is offset in the housing and my thinking is that when the driveshaft stops turning, a slight reversing of the driveshaft or 'relaxing' of the shaft causes 1 or 2 vanes to reverse direction.

If you recall during your impeller change, there is no way for any of the blades to stick straight out because of the limited space in the housing.

Actually, within minutes of me removing my old impeller, all 6 blades straightened out and it looked like new..

Here is a thread I posted for a bayliner boat owner's forum that I visit. I wanted to give encouragement to anyone who needed to change an impeller and was on the fence as to whether or not it is a DIY project.

The Impeller looks like it's had 5 years of normal wear. It is a wear item that should be replaced every couple of seasons.

Next time get the over haul kit that includes the pump housing.

Impellers have a shelf life, I have seen bad batches that throw blades for no reason.

Believe it, or not...your link was the inspiration for me to just 'do it'!

I followed your Bayliner Club forum progress, and found your pictures to be a big help, for when I dropped my lower unit. I was having no problems with my running temperatures, but the last time I was flushing out the motor, a piece of crud must have passed through the garden hose and partially blocked the water flow to the muffs. I caught it fairly quicky...but couldn't get over the fear of impeller damage.

Great post over at Bayliner Club...you need to repeat it here! :)

Good call, POPEYE!

The impeller came out of a 2005 Alpha/Gen II...I was surprised to see it in such 'good' shape.

Based upon my findings (and I agree with your 2 seasons schedule), I will not be doing this every season...but every other season.

Any experience with the blue (Globe) impellers?

Small world..... sorta.

You also made my day. Gave me a warm and fuzzy to see my observations help another boater!

My 8 yr old son and I went to see Transformers today. Halfway through the movie we hear someone behind us drop something that sounded like a cell phone... in the dark. After the movie, my boy and I felt around in the semi-dark, under our seats to help find the battery cover back to the lady's cell phone behind us. She didn't ask for our help, we just took the opportunity to keep a nice lady from crawling around on the sticky floor, looking for her cell phone back. Eventually we found it, she was very thankful.

I'm teaching my 2 boys to be the kind of people who return lost wallets and personal stuff. Part of my 'person' is to pay it forward. You probably read that I have been given priceless info on some other automotive websites that has saved me money, time, and effort.

Now off to boc.org to see what's new...
