I've got a 3.7L 170 that I'm considering replacing with either a 3.0L 4 cylinder or 3.4 6cyl. It looks like I can get a lot better deal on a 3.0 and the mounts look the same so I'm thinking it would be less of a headache to replace. What do you guys think?

I think you are making a lot of wrong assumptions.

The 3.0L will need a different gear ratio in the drive, different exhaust tube to the transom shield, differnt inner transom plate, and several other things.

The 3.4, is probably a 4.3L V6 and will need stringers for the front motormounts, y pipe to the transom shield, completely different exhaust system, is a lot wider an may not fit under your engine cover.

Well, that's a start anyway.

What's actually wrong with your 3.7? My dad has one in his garage that he removed from a friend's boat. I know it has some head surface damage, but I thought he said the block deck was okay. I do know that the "generator" still worked, though. And I think the closed cooling stuff was working too. If that would do you any good let me know.

Don is right, you'll need a lot of stuff. My dad bought a complete 5.7 engine for that guy's boat, but still had to get the exhaust Y-Pipe and the transom plate, and fabricate front motor mounts. It wasn't easy.
