I'm getting ready to look at an early 60hp Johnson, the owner does not know if it's a 69 or early 70's model. He gave me a story that the motor had been rebuild and it was originally his father's for a pontoon boat. However His dad past away, sold the pontoon and has this motor for sale, just want $150 for it. He does not know anything about motor so talking to him is useless..

Anyone have any opinions on this motor? What should I look for, if rebuild what things can I see to determine if this was true... etc..

He says the motor has been inside the garage since the rebuild and never fired up...so he doesn't know if it runs..

Please help and your advice is greatly appreciated.

I think rebuilt or not, 150 bucks is a good price for that motor in running condition. Either way, change the impeller right away, even if he says its been changed, sitting around for a long period of time will ruin the rubber in the impeller, causing it to explode and causing catastrophic consequences for your motor. There are several highly knowledgeable guys on this forum that can help you with the older motors, FR one of them. GL

Receipts would be nice if he had them. If you can't run it, a compression test would sure be good. Without running it, you are kind of buying a pig in a poke, though the asking price isn't high if there is anything left of it. They were decent engines. If its all there and you can get it fired up, you'd be in it cheap. If it has major problems, you could spend a lot of money on it. (Underline " a lot")

If you can't test run it at least do a compression check. If rebuilt no less than 100 psi and even between cylinders. If it is a 3 cylinder the 60 appeared in 1970.If its a 4 cylinder its a 64 and way to much age and bulk to make 60 hp.

"Rebuilt" is a loosely used word and therefor useless. To some people it means it has a new set of spark plugs and a new o-ring in the gas line. A truly rebuilt motor has been completely disassembled and every worn part replaced. And costs WAY more than $150.
