Hi all, I have posted here in the past and read postings all the time but due to lack of activity my account was dropped so I have the new rating. I am currently looking at a couple of "new/used" (read that "team" or "memo" boat) bass boats. One in particular is a 2005 with a 175hp 2005 V-Max HPDI that will have about 50 to 60 hours on it at time of sale. I have no experience with these motors and would like to get as much feedback as possible from the board. As with the Opti's I have read the reports of failures and problems on the older motors but nothing of late. I know our friend "Rodbolt" has made mention of problems on the big block yammies but where does the "big block" configuration start? How about the 175's? Most of the things I have been able to find on my searches deals with 150's or 225's. Aside from the standard "having the motor checked out" what should I look for if/when I go check it out? Should I insist on a diagnostic printout? Maintenance-wise, what am I getting myself into?
My only previous experiences with outboards are with a blown up Johnrude 50 (my first boating mistake) and my current motor which is an '02 Merc 4-stroke EFI 50hp which has been absolutely trouble free. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and information!

Re: Opinions Please on Yammie 175 V-Max HPDI

hello
if you carefully follow the maint schedule it will last for 800 to 1000 hours or so. most die due to something else taking out a piston. be aware that the vst filter is expensive as are O2 sensors and neither lasts forever. the low pressure pumps need periodic replacement as does the cooling system parts. they are also touchy with batteries and cable cleanliness. the 150,175 and 200 HPDI are based on the same block. no block issues but many other little things that become big things
the medium pressure filter is about 180 and needs yearly maint as well. so the maint on the motor is rather pricey if done correctly as per the maint schedule

Thanks Rodbolt. A couple more questions if I may. What is the "VST" filter -is it a vapor seperator or something? What is the service interval on it? You mentioned medium pressure filters - does maintenance consist of cleaning or is it replaced? As for the low pressure pumps and cooling system parts - can you guesstimate costs and is any of this something that someone who is mechanically adept can do themselves (I would assume cooling system maint would be impeller and t-stat)? Is there somewhere I can go to on-line to read a manual or get more info? Thanks again!

the vapor seperator on the HPDI containes the medium pressure electric pump. it has a filter that needs to be cleaned or replaced annually or every 200 hours of service. the medium pressure filter between the VST and the high pressure pump is annually or 200 hours but its a disposable inline cartridge type. you will need the correct clamps and the clamp pliers to change it. I have seen worm gear type clamps fail and allow the fuel line to pop off. at 50 PSI it sprays a bunch. the pump kit is about 60 dollars the t-stats are about 30 and the pressure valve grommet is 2.50 or so. the oil tank water trap needs maint as does the remote oil tank filter.there is also a small oil filter between the VST and the oil pump. if it has the dual electrode plugs ( gray coil connectors) you will need a .024" wire feeler gauge and the picture in the 03 tech guide to set the gap. most the maint is monkey work. anyone can do it. but it does require patience and the ability to follow directions from print.the low pressure fuel pumps are about 40 dollars apiece. the O2 sensor needs maint at 75-100 hours and if neglected will fail. its about 370 or so.
