I'm looking into getting a new boat. I'm thinking of powering it with twin 150's. I here a lot about the new Suzuki 4 stroke, but then again...I like two stroke engines and the Mercury opti's are really nice. Any comments would be very appreciated. Don't be afraid to throw Yamaha in. What is really pushing me over to the Suzuki's is the inline 4 for the 150's. The dealer keeps telling me that they're really good and gas mileage is great for outboards. He told me he crossed from Bimini to Florida last weekend and only used 28 gallons with twins pushing a Dusky 25ft'r cuddy cabin. BTW...he also sells opti's.
I would love to have etecs, but that just puts the price range over the top.

Moving to Non-Repair Outboard.

This Forum is specifically "not engine topics".

Re: opinions Suzuki vs Mercury 150s

i've got a 2005 merc 150 XR6 (carbed) and i can say nothing but good about it. Granted, its not an Optimax, but i am a merc freak and as almost all of us know, the optimax has been around and has gone through its bugs...It is a very dependable motor. As for my 150 carby, the power and merc v-6 sound is just incredible and it runs extremely smooth. The fuel efficiency is the only negitive if there would have to be one, but i knew what i was getting into before i bought the engine...i didn't buy it to have it sit in my garage and complain about gas prices waiting to go down. Mercs have always been known to be underrated in terms of power. Ive heard from a few very knowledgeable guys at screamandfly.com (a site intended for merc v-6 guys) that a 150 XR6 (or opti) puts out in excess of 160-165 h.p at the prop. So to put this in general terms, it is a very strong 150.

If I was going to rig a new boat with twin 150's, I'd put Suzuki's on it. Just great engines and easy on gas, according to owners.
