OPPS - I hit mud 2

1975 merc 115 hp

I got the prop off. Tell me if this is normal.

When throttle lever in forward position and i turn prop by hand clockwise, I get a click, click clicking sound - kinda like a ratchet. prop will not turn CCW.

When Throttle lever in reverse position - prop is locked and won't turn either way.

When throttle lever in neutral - prop free wheels both ways.

Is the clicking sound normal or have i stripped something?

don't sound normal. if in forward or reverse you should be able to turn the prop but with the resistance of the motor as you will have to overcome the compression of the engine. if you can spin it freely but with a click sounds like the something is strip/broke in there.

To be honest I think what you describe yours is doing is normal. To be sure I just checked mine. In neutral it spins freely. In reverse it is locked and in foward gear it rachets when you turn clockwise and resistance against compression clockwise. I think you have a spun hub myself but I am by no means an expert on outboards.

I thank you all. I was close to parting the boat out, not worth fixing. I'll get my prop fixed or get a new one, throw it in the water and see what happens.

maybe its normal. I was thinking that when engaged you would have to turn over the motor.

It good that this site is so active and with lot of opinions for stuff like this.

At least you got help. I'm still waiting for three days now and missing pontential buys because no one answered my questions. I need to get back out on the lake.
