my 1993 mariner has had 2 switch boxes fail recently. I replaced the old 8 year old optima battery after the first switch box failed (as it was getting weak) and only got around 20 hours on the new one. Has anyone else had trouble with engine electronics with optima batteries? the tech help folks at CDI told me this battery is a problem and I should get an old school non-maintenance free one.

their issue is with the maintenance free technology as they say it creates overheating in the regulator

Your battery is not connected to the switchboxes. Your switchboxes are powered by the stator, as in Alternator Driven Ignition (ADI).

Don't use Optima bats but also don't see how any AGM bat would damage anything that a lead acid would not
