I bought a Optimal Blue Battery from Autozone but I do not believe this battery is strong enough to handle the 150 HP Mercury. What CCA should I be using with this engine? I have a Proline 20 Sport Center Console with a few accessories fish finder and radio..

Re: Optimal Blue Battery for Merc 150HP

I do not know what "optimal blue battery" means, nor do I know it's capabilities.

I do know CCA is a automotive term and on marine batteries they call it something like MCA

Have you returned the battery for testing?

What is your cranking voltage during cranking?

At the starter connector?

At the pos+ post on battery?

And what is the voltage differential between those two points during cranking, and between the neg post and the starter housing during cranking? These may help look for voltage drop, or resistive conditions.

This is from Mercury:
1000 Marine Cranking Amps (MCA) or 750 Cold Cranking AMPS (CCA)

This Marine Optima Blue Top is 870 MCA and 750 CCA, I will buy me a AGM Group 24 Marine Starting battery with a battery switch to run the accessories once in the water.

The Optima Blue top battery is a deep cycle AGM Battery. It is not a starting battery and using it as Starting battery will eventually ruin it. The Yellow top is the starting battery I believe.

You need a marine grade starting battery with a MCA Rating of 1000. Marine grade means that it will handle shock and vibrations well and is less prone to spilling.

Save the $200.00 blue top for running your accy's like your trolling motor and get a standard lead acid Starting battery for 50 - 75 bucks and you'll be fine.
