Optimax 115 reliability?

I am on the verge of replacing my 1989 100 h.p. (carburated inline 4) with an Opti 115 to be used on a seasonal basis at 8,300+ ft. altitude. Low hours annually. My goal is to improve performance (hole shot and top end speed) to make up for the altitude. (I've ruled out the 4 stroke 115EFI. My boat could take the carburated 2 stroke 125 h.p., but then I'd still have that 2 cyl. idle/low speed weirdness.)

But some posts about Optimax reliability and repair costs are giving me second thoughts. How much of a problem is there? Has reliability improved in recent years? Is there any track record for the 115 Opti (which is an I-3 rather than a V6)? I heard that all the Optis will be replaced with new high-performance 4 strokes in a few years--not exactly a sign of confidence in the technology.

Well actually I believe that the Optis are going to be replaced by 4 strokes for emmisions purposes. I believe that it is due to happen in 2006.
