OPTIMAX not starting.

I have a 2003 OPTIMAX 150 that does not want to start after a long run. When I return to the marina after a fishing trip I usually shut off the engine until I back my trailer into the launch. When I try to start the engine, it only turns over. If I wait a while then try again, it starts. Can anyone give me a clue as to what the problem might be?

If it were my motor, I would first check for a strong spark when the motor does not want to start. If the spark is weak or non existent, then you may have a failing ignition component that is affected by heat. If the spark is good, then I would check for fuel related problems. You don't mention if the motor floods and smokes a lot when you finally get it started. Whether it does or not would be a good clue towards narrowing down the many other possibilites that could cause your starting problem.

This is based upon my experiences. Others on this forum may have additional and better advise.

Thanks for the reply. I know the OPTIMAX has to have the right amount of voltage to start or it will only turn over without starting. I somtimes have to jump it off at the launch when I return. The batteries have 12.8 volts on my multimeter, so that should be enough. Do you think it could be an overheating issue with a voltage regulator or something? When I jump it, it starts without hesitation.

One of the pitfalls of the Opti-Max is its' requirment for a large battery, something like 1000 cold cranking power. Might be time for a new battery. What does you volt meter indicate for charging. I think it should be showing around 13-14 volts. 12.8 might be ok for an auto, but not for the Opti.
Pull the batteery and have a load test done it. If that shows low then you really know it is time to replace it.

my 200 run at 14 volts on the guage over 2000rpm, 12.5 just above idle, cabellas agm batteries
