According to the solutions to ?Take a Breath Worksheet? from the
College of Chemistry ? University of California - Berkeley, 432 L. of
carbon dioxide is exhaled by an average adult per day.

This is how the results were obtained:

The volume of a breath and number of breaths per minute will vary with
the size of the person and the level of activity.

A reasonable range for the average volume of a breath is 0.1-1.0
liters. 0.5 liters is the volume of an average breath, so we will use
that number for the calculation.

?The average volume of air moved during normal quiet breathing is 0.5
L. ?

BUT you are alive
The average person breathes approximately 15 times per minute during
normal activity.

For one person, the approximate volume of air exhaled per day is:

0.5 L of air 15 breaths 60 minutes 24 hr 10,800 L of air
------------ X ---------- X ---------- X ----- = ---------------------
breath min. hr. day day

The EPA needs to get on that before my globes get too warm.

Hey now, the farmers need all that CO2 for the corn to make ethanol. Think about how vegitation will slow in growth once CO2 emissions are reduced,,,,,,,,uh, can you say less food production?

Someone has a little too much free time on their hands:)

Taking it one step further, how many liters is that globally? Now, what is that in cubic meters?

How do you get from 10800 l./day of air to 432 l./day of CO2?

Re: -------Or maybe exhaled?????

These estimates are clearly understated, apparently they never researched the CO2 output of my exwife......

You're simply calculating total respiration volume. You're assuming what we exhale is 100% CO2. Air is about 21% O2, the remainder is unused and exhaled (assuming 100% transfer of O2 during respiration, which is unlikely). I'd guess 12-15% of the total volume of exhalent is CO2.

Exhaled air contains about 5% CO2 (35-45 mmHg partial pressure). Using the above calculation would result in 540 L C02/day.
That sounds like a lot, but it works out to about 24 moles which is 1056 gm of C02. However, subtracing dead space ventilation would reduce the total to 378 L C02/day or 740 gm C02 which is pretty realistic.
