I sprayed my boat today with van sickle industrial enamel , tractor paint. I used the hardner and had to thin it like crazy to shoot thru my gun. 6 oz of mine rial sprints to 20 oz of paint. It looked really smooth until I messed up and tried unify the coat a little and it caused a lot of orange peel. Good news is the hull looks great just the outer topside has the Orange peel.
This is my first coat and don't know how long to wait before sanding it. Can says to wait 8 hours for recoat but nothing about sanding.
How long should I wait? How long would you wait?
Thanks

Hey PG, wetsanding is usually ok after 4 hours. You wanna do your recoating before 8 hrs cuz the paint is NO GOOD after that with the hardener in it. I did 2 coats a day.

The paint hardened a lot faster than I thought it would. That hardner is great stuff.
When I went to spray more paint after the first coat is when the Orange peel started. I must of did something diffrent.
I did end up throwing out half of the gallon because I didn't want to spray anymore,I'm trying 4 thin coats to get the paint uniformed and its a real pain. Sand, de gloss, and tack raging it is getting old but hope the end result is good.

I mixed 2 cups @ a time and used 1oz of Hardener. I could spray a thin coat with No left over paint. Worked Great for me!! After 4 hrs I'd wet sand using a 3m Scotch Brite pad then wipe down with Mineral Spirits and Shoot another coat. If you're getting Orange Peel I'd thin it a bit more and give it more air and less paint volume to let it atomize more. It takes some practice but once you get the right formula for air, mixture etc. it should flow really nice.

It seems to me the reason you got the peel is because you tried to fix (unify) the area by respraying before it fully tacked. When you get a bad spot, which we all do, you wait till the next coat to correct it....Essentially, you lost the wet edge, and the undercoat gassed off onto the respray area. The tech sheet for your paint system should give you the pot life, so you can mix accordingly.

I sprayed 2nd coat today and thinned paint 9oz sprints to 20 oz paint and turned the pressure up to 50 psi and went on a lot smoother.
I did get a few runs that I will sand out but you are exactly right Wog, it just takes some practice. This time no left over paint. Looks a lot better and the this coat covered all the areas. I would call it done except for those darn runs.

When you paint...Runs are inevitable at least they are when I paint!!! I guess the pros don't get em to often. Sand em out and touch em up. You might wanna invest in a Preval system for the touch up. It's less than $10 and it works great to mix up a small amount for touch ups for runs etc. It'll come in hand for scratches and chips in the future. ASK me how I KNOW THAT!!!!:D

They sanded out pretty easy and I have enough paint and hardner to do 1 more coat so I'll sand with 2000 and start again.
I will send pics. It's been a long time since I posted pics so I'll try to figure it out again.
