Well I bought the 2012 Manitou today, but I asked him to order me a Mercury 150 XS PRO instead of the Mercury 150 four stroke he had on it. After Rooster told me research, I did just that! I think the 4 stroke would have been just fine and I would have loved it, but I cant see giving up the extra HP and extra MPH gain on a performance pontoon, heck that's why I bought it was to go as fast as the floating living room would go. Im a little nervous about the noise level though. Asked the wife, would you rather go a little slower and have a quieter engine or go faster and have a louder engine, and she said quieter. But I ordered he opti anyways, she will likely never know what engine is on the boat, she is more concerned with getting kids covered in sunscreen and life jackets on than anything else. I just cant see how you can go wrong with simple design, more power and lighter weight, and equal fuel efficiency. I just cant get the four stroke to make sense under any reasoning, EXCEPT noise. Hoping its not obnoxiously loud.

Now I have to wait till next week to pick it up, ill post pics once I get her home.

Thanks for reading.

Congratulations Graham. That's a lot of pressure you're putting on me !!! I think you'll be very happy w/ the Optimax. Plan "B" could always be to turn the stereo up a little louder. A little more Led Zeppelin never hurt anybody !!! Good luck, looking forward to the pics.

She said the same thing! " Why did you ask me then, I would have never known there was a choice" Man I screwed up there.
No pressure rooster, I did tons of reading, heck I think I've read every article on the interwebz regarding optimax's and four strokes. fingers crossed its not terrible too loud, but it does have the upgraded stereo, so I will " turn it up"

On the other hand... I have had to tell my wife this about questions to our kids back in the day. Our son learned early on not to lie to us, Wife would ask him about what he did last night or over the weekend. He would answer her and the immediate response was... "Don't tell me that stuff" Well, DUH, If you don't want to know don't ask!

Congrats to the OP. Looking fwd to seeing pics!

can you hold a conversation at cruising speed? How about at idle/putting around? with the optimax.

I have a 4 stroke on the pontoon I just bought. I love how quiet it is.

I've got a two stroke 90hp, i don't find it too loud. You can have a conversation fine. It will be loud at WOT, but who cares then. The sound will make you think you're going even faster!

You really should consider signing into Pontoonforums.com and repost your question. That's where the biggest bunch of experts are on this subject.

The 150 Pro XS is a conservatively rated motor--more like 165 hp. But so is the 150 FourStroke--and also the Yamaha F150.

The whole deal is that the Pro XS is a motor that performs best when you're running fast--4500-5800 rpm's. The 150 FourStroke and all 4 strokes will run plenty fast on top end, and they're quiet and efficient at the speeds that 90% of all pontoons are run--3000 to 4000 rpm's. And the 4 strokes will top out at 6000-6200 rpm's--faster than the Pro XS.

The reason that few 2 strokes go on tritoons is that the 4 strokes just do such a good job pushing a barge. And believe it or not, but the 4 strokes require so much less maintenance than the Pro XS--just change the oil and lower unit grease--and that's it.

Go with the 4 stroke if you still have the option. You won't be sorry.

Thank you for your reply. I did order the pro XS, and I will take it, as I told him to order it, thats only fair on my part. I hope it will be a good motor, I'm sure it will. If I don't like it, I have only myself to blame, it was my decision. Live and Learn.

I'm sure you'll be happy either way. Its kind of like the difference between being given the choice of having a free 6 pack of beer in cans or bottles. Do you really care? ITS BEER!

That said, I only have experience with smaller engines and went from a 95 model Merc Force50 to a 2013 Yamaha 50TL 4S. In THIS case, its not even a comparison. Either way you're going to be out on the water so you'll have fun.
