I have just bought a Orkney Dory 505 Sport which is 16ft 6" long. I am after an engine for it and wondered if there is some sort of formula like boat length times engine weight or something. I am after a reasonably powerful 2 stroke engine for it as I want it to perform all aspects of fun like skiing/ fishing day boating. I have been offered a 130Hp Johnson at 175Kg for it. Any thoughts?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Orkney Dory 505 Sport

go for it
ive put a 60hp triple evinrude on the back of my 4 metre and that's ok.
a 130 would be nice power for the 505 and go very well.
lots of the dell quays had 140's on them and they go good, so yours will be fine.
I know of a 115 on a 505 and that's not any problem and weight is about 30 kilo less though.
just put battery a touch forward and see how she goes.
Orkney's are deeper sided than the dellquay too, and much heavier built.

I would look at the capacity plate on it. It should say how much HP the boat is rated for.
