SPOKANE, Wash. ? A man driving a 20-foot ski boat on Newman Lake ran over his wife after she was thrown into the water Wednesday and the boat propeller severed her left arm, a Spokane County sheriff's deputy said.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital and was expected to survive.

Robert Kienel, 27, of Spokane, was arrested for investigation of assault by watercraft, a Class C felony, Marine Deputy Patrick Bloomer said in a statement.

The deputy said the couple took possession of the ski boat Wednesday afternoon and the woman was riding on the boat's bow while the man drove. She was thrown into the lake when her husband took a hard turn at about 30 mph, the deputy said.

The arm, severed below the elbow, apparently sank and emergency crews could not recover it.

Bloomer said the floor of the boat was "littered with empty beer and wine" containers.

The boat was seized as evidence and the case remains under investigation.

If she was thrown off the bow while he was making a hard turn... how did he run over her? He had to have made a second pass, right?

Either way... it's been said before... drinking and being underway don't mix. If you're going to drink on a boat, make sure you stay anchored until you're sober again.

Hate to say this but they should both be charged.

Motorized vehicles and alcohol do not mix! Friend tore his rotator cuff in a 4 wheeler accident over the weekend - alcohol and a 4 wheeler. Alcohol and a motor are not a good combination. Please be careful!

Re: Ouch

she was probably sitting on the bow of a closed bow boat, rather than a bowrider.

Sounds like she was hit just after she fell out of the boat which I believe is very possible that it could happen.

Just thinking of how my cousin made a sharp turn this past weekend with his father's boat and how that would of played out if somebody had fallen out, yep I believe it is possible.

The way those inboard ski boats turn, if the driver was inexperienced...........I can see it happening.
