Hey everyone let me start out by saying what an awesome site this is. I have learned so much over the past week or so prepping myself for my family's "new to us" project. This is my first boat and I am very excited to get her in the water and the good old hard work getting her there. First off I am a contractor by trade and have years of experience in all different types of projects and material. Well long story in as short as i can make it....my girlfriend's father gave us his 1983 Chaparral 162 with a 1983 Johnson 70 seahorse outboard. It had been winterized and under a tarp for the last 10 years at least. I am very happy and best of all it was free!! Well we brought it home a couple days ago and after researching this site i new exactly where to start. We gutted everything in the boat and am happy to report that transom seems solid, but found two small soft spots on the deck. Not to bad but reason enough to pull the deck and start fresh. I have a good understanding of the deck and stringer system work and have no concern with doing the work myself. The only questions I do have is working with fiberglass to go over the new wood installed on the deck. I have no experience with laying fiberglass, but do have alot of exp. in finishing work (drywall, plaster, concrete...etc.) I am thinking of going with PVC exterior trim boards to use in place of the side trim and bow seats. I figure if i wrap in foam and vinyl they should hold up for a while. Has anyone used this? If so how to the staples hold or glue while wrapping in the material? I am gonna order new lounge type seats and carpet. Well guys i guess its picture time so let me know what you think and any help will be greatly appreciated..........

Welcome to the forum. That's a sharp little boat and being a 16' I think it will move out pretty good with that 70, plus those are great motors.

Those PVC trim boards are great and I've used them twice.
Here in the bow of my current boat:

and here as the dashboard in my last one:

Like you mentioned, my only concern would be are they too soft to hold staples well. Not sure. They sure are great otherwise.

If you're going to be documenting your project, set up an account on photobucket.com and upload your pictures there and link to them from here. Much better than dealing with iboat's tiny filesize restrictions.

Thanks ezmobee....all my pics actually are on photobucket I will def post a link to the album. I didn't realize the would be so small.

I will test staple a piece to see how it holds up. Both of your boats look awesome, great work. Another question...If i cut access holes into the bow seat bottoms for storage do you think I would jeopardize any structural integrity of the design or am i over thinking it? I would leave at least 3 inches on each side of the existing seat. Thanks again.

I think you'd be good with cutting some storage. They typically have that anyway. Check out greatlakesskipper.com for some good deals on hatches you can install in there.

Just came in from starting the motor for the first time (with the plugs pulled i pre-lubed the motor and turned it by hand clock-wise).......new battery, plugs, gas, she started right up and idled great. I really need to get the deck and interior done. Looking forward to the water!!

Yet another example of why I love outboards. I dragged my project home after having not been run in years. I cleaned a mud bee nest out of the fuel line connector and it fired right up and I went boating :D

I have a 1985 162 like yours these boats are well built i have a 75 hp mercury four stroke and this hull is a fast hull, mine does at least 45 mph, i had a 90 hp (max rate hp), and this motor does just as well, these boats are very fun and take rough water well, i have read these boats are fully in capsuled in fiberglass, which makes it good, i need to restore my interior also, i have been using mine the way it is and has been doing good, i thought i was the only one out there with a 162 you only see luxury chapparals these days

I have a 1983 162 as well and i have completely replaced the floor with new foam and epoxy covered plywood and its held up great for quite a while now. All the flotation foam was water-logged so the boat sits much higher and s much lighter now too!
