Yes CKB, a HUGE accomplishment and bigger CONGRATS to your wife and yourself for all the hard work put in to get to become a LEGAL citizen. I know I have a hard enough time with the question they asked on who's smarter than a 5th grader

and as said earlier just in time for the 4th.......

Yup, the fireworks will special Wednesday night. Thanks rrumba.

Just a question which I am sure is a stupid one. Didn't she become a citizen when she married you??

Congrats anyway. It really warms my heart when you see the appreciation of becoming a citizen of this country and how much it means. It reminds me how much many born here take it and the country for granted.

Hey rogerwa. Thank you. Getting married put her in a different pool which shortens the time to get permanent residency (can be as much as 9 years if not married to a citizen. But even after conditional residency (green card), tons of work to get permanent residency 2 years later. Then another year before you can apply for citizenship.

Hey tdf, thanks man. I was in Des Moines one time. Lost an expensive gold chain bracelet on the tarmac at the airport. Just in case you found it. Lol

I am glad I was born here.My great grand parents, seven generations back, migrated here from Germany and Ireland. It was a bit easier back then I would imagine.
Don't count on it. I'm 25th generation American (1633-English) on my dad's side. The test they took to become part of this great country was to just stay alive. ;) My mom's family (German) had it easy. They didn't get here until the 1740's and there was a "road" to what is now the Harrisburg, Pa. area. :D

BTW: Congrat on your citzenship. I had a chance to work on a project in Durban several years ago, Beautiful place

Dingbat, thanks for the congrats. Did you trace your family history? If so, how did yo do it? I've been thinking about signing on with Ancestry.com but don't know if their claims are just advertising hype or if it's really a great tool.

My sister has good success with Ancestory.com. She is in the process of researching my Mother's family. She posted on Ancestory.com asking about information our great, great, grandfather. As a result she was contacted by his brother's (my great, great uncle) long lost family. They sent us a copy of a picture of our GG grandfather and his brother. She just made contact with the family of one of my great, great, great grandfathers’ sibling back in the Germany. The families lost contact with each other over 130 years ago.

I've been hearing great stories like this one. I'll have to give it a try. For some reason, I have been motivated lately to dig into my family history. Thanks.

Hearty congratulations to both of you.

I work with a lady from South Africa (CEO of her American company). Brilliant woman and a great person - a joy to work with. Coincidentally, your wife's picture resembles her.

I am curious about something you posted. With all respect, why did the process cost you "tens of thousands" of dollars...? I don't understand that.

That is a good question. Before I met her she had been working with several lawyers, each giving her bad advice or just not caring other than to get her money. I have talked with a lot of people since and I've come to the conclusion many immigration lawyers know their clients have no alternative and they don't have to work hard on their behalf.

Once I got involved with her, I met with her lawyers several times and finally their big boss from out of town. He admitted they got things all screwed up. But nothing much happened on their part. We ended up filing a complaint to the Florida Bar, but they weren't all that interested in investigating it.

Finally we did meet a guy new to the immigration area, so he worked cheap to get some experience. His inexperience meant he hadn't learned yet to take advantage of his clients. Anyway, he got the paperwork headed in the right direction, which led to her getting her residency. From that point on, we did all of the filings ourselves. Lot of work, but doable.

Added to these costs was the crazy high tuition for non-residents for her son's education (on student visas). Adding it all up, lots of money.

I just wanted to post on this special 4th of July for us that I am overwhelmed at the well wishes of so many here on iboats. What a great American group. Thanks again everyone.

Proud to be an American!
