A big hello to all Starcraft Owners,

During the last year, I have enjoyed reading the many rebuild forums that you have all posted and I thank you all for sharing your pics and stories.

My old 14 ft tincan has served me well since I bought it used in the early 90's. But electrolysis has continued to eat holes in her hull, the many miles of logging roads have beaten and cracked her hull, and the 15hp Mariner finally succumbed to saltwater damage. There have been literally hundreds of fish caught with my ol' tincan and many camping trips too (I miss her already).

But it was time to find a new boat and after researching all the options, I decided a Starcraft would suit our needs the best. I love the aluminum hulls for their durability and low maintenance.

We were able to locate several Starcraft vessels locally, that included a beauty 18' Holiday with an I/O, but I had my mind set on an the 16 ft bowrider with an outboard. I wanted the extra room upfront to pack our crab and prawn traps, while leaving some deck space behind the seats for fishing.

After a year of looking, we almost bought a 16 ft enclosed bow (don't know the model type) Starcraft with a 40 hp Johnson, but decided to keep looking for a bowrider.

Just before last x-mas, we received a return call to check out a SS 16' Starcraft (late 70's or early 80's still not sure). It was puzzling, because I had not called anyone with that number that had a boat for sale or responded to an ad for a month. Well, we let it slide for a week or so, then decided to call about the boat. Turns out, it was the owner's Dad that called us back and they had dropped a grand off the price!!

We made a quick trip over to the Dad's place and the hull was in pretty decent shape and it had a 96 Yamaha 60hp 2 stroke hanging off the back that looked brand new. Asked the fella to fire up the outboard but he was hesitant as it had not been running since summer. Well, the battery was dead, so we jumped it from his car, hooked up a water hose, connected the gas tank, and that yammie came to life after a few cranks. I was impressed that the yammie idled right down, the water pump indicator squirted some H20 out, and after taking off the cowling that 60 hp looked sparkling new.

The package included a 80's EZ Loader trailer that needed some help and tires real badly. We negotiated another hundred dollars off and settled at $2300.00 bucks.

I have repaired a number of things like wheel bearing, tires, and most bolts on the trailer that I will post about another time. Oh yeah, after the owner delivered the boat to us, I did a compression test on all 3 cylinders that came out great ( yup should of done that before buying it). Hopefully, once I figure out the photobucket pictures I will post pics of our new boat.

We have already gone out several times either just cruising, fishing, or crabbing/prawning. There is more work to do, but as camping and fishing season is here already it will have to wait until the fall/winter to get done.

Thanks again guys for sharing your stories, it definitely helped me decide on the Starcraft SS 16 ft, which is perfect for our needs.

Another big welcome aboard!
SS boats are all over this place. Cant swing a cat without hitting one..lol
The pic thing is easy.
Open a free photobucket account.
Upload pics to it
Make sure you click the presize feature in photobucket, i think 680x470 is what the forum likes best.
Have two webpage windows open, this iboat thread and your photobucket page
Copy the img code on photobucket and then just paste it into your post.
Easier than finding a decent tinny out west for a deal!

Thanks InMotion and CheapBoatKev for the welcome to the site.

Appears I'm having some problems downloading pics to photobucket site. I have created my account, but trying to download pics to my on-line album isn't working and I have been at it too long today...try again tomorrow.

Cool looks like the photos have worked.... thanks for the info on pasting the photos CBKev

The gal in the photo made the top from scratch as the old canvas one was missing the middle part that you see in the photos. We have just come back in from our maiden voyage, a 5 mile up and back on Comox Lake. It was freezing cold, so she made a cover for the trap door going to the bow from the cabin next.

This is our main tow vehicle just getting ready to haul out the boat from the ocean. I wanted a light aluminum boat, as we also sleep in the vehicle for quick overnighters to the west coast of Vancouver Island or trips up island. I should add that we also have f150 and camper too for extended stays.

The next 3 photos were coming back from jigging herring, we caught about 50 of them and then one of the local commercial guys came over and gave us another 150 to take home. Man, the wind was only supposed to be 15 kts gusting to 20 kts. I had us tucked in behind a island when the winds hit 41 kts, the 60-70 foot commercial boats starrted dragging anchors. All the commercial boats picked up their anchors and headed into harbour to tie up to the docks.

You can see the wind taking off the tops of the waves as we took it on the side running back to shore!!!

I was thoroughly impressed with the super sport and the 60 hp yammie, but I would not venture out in 40 plus winds again. The only place on the coast that the winds came up that high was right there by that island (sometimes the weather forecast can be so wrong)!!!

Thanks for the welcome jasoutside. Yeah, she looks good and the PO tore it down to the floor back int he 90's. I sure wished he had replaced the plywood floor too, as it has two soft spots. I already patched one spot and will do the other spot as well. With family coming to visit next month and looking forward to boating/fishing there won't be time for any big repair until later date.

I followed your rebuild postings and you done some awesome work!!

Now that is a sea trial, FishN. I would have stayed on the trailer. Great SS for a good price. I'm with EZ on linking in the "I wanna buy a boat" threads. Keep having fun and welcome to the Starmada. buddy.

Thanks ezmobee, ya the price was decent, but there is future repairs to do, like a couple of repairs to hull. Still, we love the SS compared to our 14' open Springbok

Thanks for the welcome GA_Boater

Hey, I'm with you on keeping it on the trailer. We had just stopped on the way to the ramp to watch the commercial boys fishing for herring and it was almost flat calm. But 1 1/2 hours later, wow it started to scream, my gal had never experience that kinda of weather before and she was the one taking the photos!! But taking it on the side wasn't too bad and we could of just stayed right behind one of the larger boats heading straight into harbour if we couldn't get back to the ramp. I did have to stay on the throttle to limit taking on too much spray and it was only about a mile run back to the ramp.

Although, we are fair weather boating/fishing people, it is good to know the handling characteristics of the boat in less than idea weather conditions....never know when the weather forecast is wrong.

Beautiful boat and great pics!

Thanks CBKev, it would have been much easy to have picked up a bimini top and installed it, but we get far too much "liquid sunshine". So the top had to be attached to the windshield to keep us dry and she also made a front cover over the deck area to help block the wind and reduce down flooding from spray and pounding into waves. I look for a pic of that front cover to post.

I have been toying with the idea of some type of umbrella support with a canvas over it that would snap into the bow area and make a pup tent kinda do-hickey if I ever wanted to camp on the water on my 18 ft SS.
I look forward to every pic you can toss up, a you are a GREAT addition to the Starmada!

FishN - Beautiful 16SS, and a great buy. Very nice pictures. Glad to see you weren't in the Springbok when the winds picked up.

1+ on what EZ and CBK said, a fantastic example of how to buy wisely.

Hang on to that gal, she's a keeper.:D

Awesome boat! And thanks for the confidence inspiring photos illustrating the abilities of a 16'SS. And to think I have nervous about my 18'SS on Powell.

That's a good idea CBKev. We too were wanting to camp on the boat for overnighters as we have many inlets/fjords here on Van. Island and the mainland of BC Coast to explore. The distance travelled, packing extra fuel, and cost of gas makes it near impossible to go on these trips unless we stay on the boat as some inlets have no facilities to camp at. We were just going to throw a tarp over the boat at night to keep the 'dew' from getting our sleeping bags and clothes damp at night.

We are so looking forward to all the adventures this SS will help make possible for us!!!!
