love your pics as always! good luck with school.....you got some guts to start something like that.

yeah, pack that spare key. i once had to break into my truck in Mexico, using my fish club to whack a thin prybar through the gasket enough to pop the lock button......fortunately i was in the expat-Canadian area of the Ranchitos so they just thought i was a bit eccentric....in the US, someone would have been calling the cops!

F-N-M - great pics of a great trip. You're really using the SS for everything. Even as a place to drop to one knee and proposing. :D Congratulations!

Hey Rusty there is a guy in Comox that has lot's of keys for mercs.
Pete's lock shop 250.339.7797
Used him to replace a lost key on a merc remote a few years back.
He might have some keys for a Yamaha.... give him a call.

I keep a spare in my truck and have in the past taped one into the glove box in the boat.
Now I just leave it in the boat.....

Thanks for the info GLG. We just got home tonight from Seattle visiting with friends. My Gal used her git'r'done approach and picked up 2 new key for our yammie down there...sure hope that they work. I goggled spare keys and there is a number on the original key that is supposed to match the start/shifter module ( can't remember what its called right now...lol). Check it out tomorrow.

We got home from camping with friends the weekend before and the next day family arrived to stay for 4 days. We had one day to get everything organized here at home and left early the next morning for Southern Adventures!!

Life can be busy...4 more days and back to school for 9 months of re-training...

there was no getting away for you:D Congratulations to both of you!!!!!!!!!!!:D
I really like how colorful your fish get in your area...
You commented on my rod holders or lack there-of ...I have rod holders on the sides of the gunnels
but the larger size rods don't fit...I'll probably have to get the tube style for the giant rods...

Re: Our recent purchase of SS 16 ft Starcraft

Well, the "Capt in Waiting" wanted to go camping for a couple of days, so after gathering up School Supplies for me, we packed up the boat and our tow rig and left one day after getting home from our Seattle excursion. Headed 2 hours up North Vancouver Island and the camping spots were full  It being a long weekend and all, I suggested we immediately launch the SS and go prawning, (that would be shrimping for you Southern Folks ;).

The weather was cloudy and coolish, but it soon turned sunny and hot. Threw out our traps and beached the boat to explore one of the beaches that are only accessible by boat or plane. This fact was to allow an hour or so for the traps to soak.

An interesting note here, as some less than desirable individuals had blocked the ramp, we launched right on the beach Starcraft style!! This procedure brought many on-lookers as no else thought to try this and they all had fiberglass boats. :)

Well , after pulling the trap and carefully storing our One prawn in the cooler, we moved location and set the traps again. Killing some time I took my Gal through Surge Narrows, remembering of course this is salt water, and the tide was pushing along at 8 knots. The pass is quite narrow, I have not been through here is years, and my co-pilot had indicated that she was scared... I went for it!! What a rush, the bottom went from 40 ft to 80 ft and the water dropped in elevation it was like going over a waterfall... too cool.

Yup, the Captain in waiting was... thrilled...nope not likely boys. She had some choice words for me, like never doing that again. Boy, was she wrong!! We had to go back through the narrows to get to the campsite and pick up our traps..lol

I chose to go around the islands in Settlers Group and take on a different pass just to spice things up abit for my co-pilot. I had my marine chart that clearly showed 2 large rocks and the route to follow. As we were half way through the angry, boiling body of water, 2 other boat decided to come through the pass at the same time... towards us  and I do mean

That made things even more interesting and we passed within feet of the other boats.

Re: Our recent purchase of SS 16 ft Starcraft

We made it through the rapids and picked our traps totally skunked except for some extra large sunstars (starfish). Headed for another spot to try, but 1st we had to navigate another set of rapids...wow, the tide was smoking along by this point and we lost 6-7 knots of head way.

It was going great until we almost dropped into a whirlpool 4-5 times larger than our SS... This whirlpool was hidden from my view by being concave in nature, I couldn't see it until we were mere feet from being in it. A quick hard to port and hit the throttle for more speed and we passed safely by it. Of course, I was laughing, hooting and hollering, and I asked my Gal if she wanted to drive?

Oddly enough there was no answer, I glanced over at her and asked again, she just shook her head. no!! I couldn't help but notice she had her fingers imbedded in the dash...:D

At 50 years of age, I had finally figured out how to get a woman to stop talking... scare the be'jees out of her, lol. We picked up enough prawns for a couple of dinner that will be shared with friends. Made it back to the campsite, pulled out our SS, yup, on the beach as the ramp was still blocked by 2 vehicles w/trailers, noticed that some of the campers were rowdy and drunk. Decided to move to quiet spot on the side of the road, had some wine, passed on dinner, and crashed in bed within the hour...exhausted.

B2, the spare keys we picked up states side worked great, Pal..lol so the theory is we won't leave boat keys at home again, well that's theory ;)

One of you had some fun. Do I see marriage counseling on the horizon? Maybe pre-marriage. Other than a few moments of stark terror on the intended's side, you guys had a nice day. Did you get any itcher drivers to think TIN?

On the prawning - Down here in the South, cast netting is the most common method of recreational fisherman shrimping. Would cast netting work up in your neck of the woods?

I appreciate the congrats, Starcraft16SS. Wow, 6 or 7 seven rods in your pic...lol one need to be creative in order to find spots to store all the rods. I have some stored horizontal on the sides of the hull ans some stored upright in the front deck... sorry no pics camera back in shop for repairs :(

Lol, nope no marriage counselling needed, my gal left for work this morning with a smile on her face and thanked me for the weekend of ....Fun!!

We fish for prawn between 180- 350 feet of water, plus factor in the tide drift and the cast nets wouldn't even make it to the bottom. We have to add weight in the trap and on the set line to get it to the bottom and stop the tide from pulling it out to deeper water.

Re: Our recent purchase of SS 16 ft Starcraft

One final note to our last weekend of camping,

We relaxed the following morning, went for a walk on the beach, had breakie, met up with Montana Bob and his wife Shelly again (their are from ... Montana and have migrated up here permanently), and drove to Roberts Lake. We launched the SS to wash out the salt water from the boat and outboards and explore the lake. A couple of beautiful beaches to camp on that are accessible only by boat and we met another couple that run a summer camp for kids (boat access only). These folks gave us a tour of the place and invited us back to camp sometime, it was great to see folks helping out under-privileged kids.

Highlights were running the rapids, meeting 5 different couples to chat with, spending time with my sweetheart, and making it home safe and sound...

Rusty.... living on the edge, well only sometimes :D

No-no on the cast netting. After I posted I thought about how deep are they setting traps?

Thanks for a fun report, FNM. Good times had by all. Livin' on the edge is fine. As long as the edge isn't the edge of a whirlpool. Your bride-to-be and I might have been clinging to each other for dear life while you cackled in in glee. LOL
