Well i split the OD today Pre Alpha 8 spline lower unit shaft, and as you see by the water pump is a mouse house. When I drained the oil it looked ok a nice green/blue. When i slit the housing some blackish oil dripped out of the shaft input area in the upper housing. see attached "Question" How does the oil get from the lower unit to the top? Like when you fill it? It seems to me the oil that came out the bottom wasn't mixed with the top oil. (different colors) Thanks! (anyone know an exterminator) haha!

There is a small passage between the upper and lower that is sealed with the tiny black quad ring on the penny

It is one of the many small things in the manual that require reading it MANY times so you do not for get it ;)

I would like to see the exaust bellows as i think you will find a nice size hole :)

The b in the drawing below shows that passage and where the "quad ring" type seal tommays shows (on the penny).
I do believe if you had started it with all that in there, it would have eventually blown out past the prop, but sure would have been a very surprised and unhappy mouse family

Thanks guys, Yeah i found the little oil port when i started cleaning things up it doesn't look half bad cleaned up i took the water pump housing out the impella and inners look great. "will replace the impella though" Can oil come out of the upper sline hole where that seal is and the shft came out of when the shaft is out? I see grease in there but a little oil came out too.

So now do you see how the oil goes from the upper to the lower? You should clean everything out that you can, including the screens on the lower section, knowing what's been in there, then check your bellows real good, if needed, you can save yourself some work, & money on the exhaust bellows if you just want to get a Mercruiser rubber "horn type exhaust spout" that just fastens to the outdrive plate (where the flapper is) instead of an exhaust bellows, that fastens to the drive as well, but you won't get thru the hub prop scavenging, so you'll lose some of that breakneck speed :D and, it will be a little louder all around, so at least you'll have a mellow sound of power ;)
By the way, the upper housing should hold a vacuum, so you only may get a little oil out, and it's an impeller, not "impella",,,lol

The exhaust bellows looks good. The mice came through from the prop end. I think i'm gonna change the input shaft seal. And if i can figure out the shift shaft seal, it looks like a big slotted retainer thing. Is the seal in that or under it?

The shift shaft seal is in that big slotted thing, which is called the lower shift shaft bushing. See website below.

OK, so you have to take the bushing out to change the seal by the looks. Can you do it without disassembling the lower unit and taking the shift shaft out? Thanks for that sight i see now there's a tool for it.

You don't have to disassemble the lower drive, just use that tool unscrew the bushing assembly.

If you shaft is not the new stainless steel shaft as mentioned in the above website, I would recommend changing it out as well. I had a problem with my pre-alpha drive not shifting into gears, even though I had done all the proper cable adjustments. Turned out, the splines on the drive shaft looked just like the ones in the photo on that website.

Thanks, My shaft is in good shape with no corrosion. Her's some pics less the "mouse house". I think this leg will survive with some tlc. new seals, orings, gaskets and oil. :D

Re: Out Drive Mouse House

almost sure the drivshaft is a 7 spline v.s. the fine spline on later units.
