I've posted a lot of questions recently and you guys are a lot of help. I'm still new so forgive me if they are silly. I do use the search but my problems never seem to show up there :( I just got this boat and took it out this weekend for the first time. Before I went out I noticed the oil monitor was empty. I filled it and carried extra for the test run. After 15 minutes we stopped I checked it and it was below the fill mark so I filled it again. Ran another 15 minutes checked it and it was low again. I decided there was a leak but I had brought enough oil to stay out for a little while. Checked a third time and it hadn't lost a drop. Stayed out for three ours stopping periodically and still full to the line. My question is how is this possible and what action do you recommend?

Re: Out drive oil monitor

The drive was low on oil to start with.
Have you changed the oil in it?
Did you fill it from the drain (bottom) hole with a pump if you did?
The reason for the monitor is just that, to fill it as needed in case of a leak.
Im guessing if there is a leak it would show up the driveway or the bildge, if you were leaking that much.
Id start from scratch, removed the res, drain the drive, refill per the manual and reattach the res. Then run it again and see if the level drops.

Re: Out drive oil monitor

best way to change the drive oil on the genII with an oil monitor,or a bravo.
remove the monitor fill cap, remove the lower drain plug.

allow it to drain a few minutes then remove the monitor bottle to clean the mud out of it.
then remove the vent plug from the upper and allow the unit to drain.

if your using the reccomended merc HP gear lube then the mud can clog the monitor tube.
this mud is normal its just the anti-wear solid oil additives seperating.

once the bottle is clean and the oil drained move the cavitation plate level, fill from the bottom until the level hits the vent plug, install the vent plug.

with the resivoir cap still off continue filling until the bottle is at the full line, replace the cap, replace the lower plug.

its still possible that it wil burp a bit of air so check it after the first 15 min or so of regular run time.

Re: Out drive oil monitor

Can you fill the drive by just squeezing the bottle or do you need a pump?

Re: Out drive oil monitor

a pump would be much easier and well worth the ten bucks it costs - quicksilver makes a pump that fits in the quart gearlube bottle - available at any mercruiser dealer/service parts provider
