Out of shop....still not working.

Still trying to get my grandpa's old boat to work. I just spent $600 at the local Johnson/Evinrude shop - they replaced a bad coil, adjusted the timing, fixed a bad ignition switch, replaced some plug wires and got it running great...at the shop. Unfortunately, when I took it out in the open water it still didn't run the way it should.

The motor is a 1983 Johnson 60hp. It starts up very easy, idles beautifully and shifts like a champ. The problem is that it bogs down considerably at medium to high speeds. If I throw the shifter all the way forward I get great power for a split second, but then it bogs right down again.

I have already done a carburetor rebuild, so either it's not in the carbs or I didn't do the rebuild right. I know I put everything back together right and I know I got the float measurements correct. I had a Johnson manual and followed it to a tee...with the exception of two things. 1) I did not blow everything out with a high pressure hose; and 2) I used a makeshift screwdriver to take out the low and high speed orifices - their were some very small burrs on the high speed orifice.

Did I screw up the rebuild or could there be another solution?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the fuel pump can't keep up.

If you pump the primer bulb while shes bogging will it pick up again?? There are some small nooks and crannies in those carbs that need to be blown out , even take some wire to to get it properly cleaned after soaking all night.

I'll try squeezing the bulb while running. Any other things I should try next time I'm on the water? Thanks all.

Re: Out of shop....still not working.

Fuel pump was fine. The problem was a dirty high speed jet. The boat is finally running, after a 16 year hiatus. Yeaah! Previously, it had only been running on one cylinder due to a bad coil. The dirty jet was in the cylinder that hadn't been running, so I'm assuming that it kicked up some gunk when it was finally fired up again. Also, I was also excited to see that both cylinders crank out 150psi. which, I believe, is pretty good for a 1983 60hp. Right?
