Hey Guys

I have a slow leak of gear oil (about a table spoon a week while not being used) from the weep hole in the front of my drive at the shift shaft bushing. I relaced the bushing and it appears to be also be leaking at the output shaft on the gear case (upper). I'm wondering whats involve in changing that seal.

During a day of playing, I don't looose any gear oil. During the week I loose about a table spoon. I was going to leave it til fall when we're done boating. If its not too much trouble I will change it out now.

Is this something that is likely to get worse. There is no water intrusion.

Thanks.....

That is what normally happens, mechanical things never heal.

There is no water intrusion

Yet, there will be as it gets worse.

It's not that difficult to replace those seal, but you do have to dis assemble the upper.

I hve not had the gear case appart yet so I have no idea what I'm in for. I looked around in the manual and didn't find anything specific to replacing that seal. Do I need any special tools or can I just lift the guts out, change the seal and put them back in. I have been solveing most of my problems to this point but this one makes me a little nervous.

Section 3A of the manual covers it.

Thanks Don. I called my Merc guy and he said its likely a good idea to re-seal the whole drive. The tools required to do the job properly are quite expesive. He quoted me 3hrs @ 80.00/hr plus the seal kit and possibly the yoke. I think I will go that route.

Does that seem reasonable?
