I picked up a light 14 foot Jon Boat and a junker 7Hp Clinton that doesn't work. If I have to what pound thruster would I need in order to be able to move the boat around if i have to buy a trolling motor instead of having to spend money I don't have for a new outboard? This boat will only be used in the canals and waterways close to shore. Any help will be appreciated. Thank You in advance

It's been many years since I ran one on a jon boat but it doesn't take much.
I troll a 1500#, loaded, glass boat with a 54# turust.
Best advice I can give is buy the largest one that fits your budget.

12Footer's 12Footer uses a Motorgude T-30 (30lb thrust). It pushes me just fine.
I've also mounted it on my 16.5f Bliner, and it still pushes fine, although control is somewhat awkwrd. So as BW17 sugested, 50lb would push you regardless, tho not as long (more currnet drain. Speakin of which,be sue to use a rolling motor battery, not a car battery. It will ruin the car battery after only a few trips. This is due to the steady, low-current drain. Car batteries aren't built to take this.

Don't forget a decent battery charger too.

I'd get one that will put out 10 amps, but "trinkle charge" too, so that the batteries will last longer.

Desperado,

Some of the Minn-Kota motors offer "modulated pulse width drive technology", a quote stolen from schematic.

Basically, this circuitry GREATLY enhances battery life. That's important since it's your only mode of propulsion-other than "armstrong" power.

Other brands offer a similar feature although I'm not sure what they call it.

Clamp one on and get that 13 year old out there.

Schematic,

That would be good. I've always wondered how that worked.

Thanks.
