I have a 14' fiberglass boat, there is no capacity plate on it. It seems to be a runabout boat. There was a 75hp on there from the recent owner that needs a bit of work to get it up and running.

I was wondering if I could fit a 100hp on the boat without over powering it? Thanks for the help!

that boat was probably rated for a 50hp new, looks like it is pre 1972 design, when the tags were not required. the 75 is tops i would put on it, and you don't have to use all the hp. can tell what engine is on it. outline looks johnson/evinrude. it can run again.

The boat is a crownline, and the motor is a 1960 Evinrude 75 hp V-4. I pulled the heads off due to mice making nests in the jugs. The only problem I see is having access to the parts....

Any suggestions on where to get parts? I want to rebuild the carbs, hone the cylinders out and new rings, which means new gaskets etc. And a few other parts depending on there condition.

An old 14 is already overpowered with a 75. A 100 would be insane!

I wouldn't overhaul that old V-4. They are gas hogs of an incredible magnitude. You'd do much better investing in a newer 50 twin with thru-prop exhaust. It'd be just as fast and use a lot less gas. They started building those in the 70s.

Go to the USCG (US Coastguard) website. There is a section available that describes the process to determine the outboard capacity for various hull types. As posted above I would be suprised if your boat is rated for more than 50 hp. For example I have a 12 foot boat of similar design. The rated capacity for my boat is 10 hp. Hope this helps.

100hp on that boat is insane in my opinion.

There is no way that older 14' runabout is rated at 100 hp. I suspect, from it's look that it was rated for 50 hp. With a good-running 50, it'll do around 35 mph on plane.

I grew up around boats like that one. They're tons of fun and cheap to operate, since they go fast with a smaller outboard.

Find a nice 50 hp from the 80's and have at it.
