I am repowering my boat, it previously had a 1984 75hp Chrysler Outboard. I now have a 1986 90hp Johnson. I now need to replace my controls, do I need to buy a Johnson/Evinrude/OMC Control? I am trying not to spend over $100 for the control and I see alot out there but am not sure what I have to use. Thanks

Re: Outboard Controls

Well you definitely can't use your existing one. You MAY be able to use one of the Teleflex, etc. universal ones. Your best bet is an OMC one from eBay or CL.

the control I have now is a side mount with the control facing starboard, I have not seen any side mounts that face that way. do you know if they can face either way or are they one directional. if I could use any side mount it would make this alot easier, I have been looking for a specific side mount that face starboard and can find one, i was going to use a top mount but i dont have the room.

Re: Outboard Controls

As far as any I've ever seen, Chryslers used a Morse Control. Many Morse controls were adaptable to a bunch of motors, but I can't say for absolute certain on this one. A picture of the workings would help.

However, the control is only part of the picture. You need the electrical cables and stuff. All that is pretty much specific to the motor.

I guess my point is that the cable and switches are part of the control. I guess you are attempting to buy it piecemeal. I suppose that is ok if that's the way you want to do it. If it is, perhaps you should pursue the original question as to whether the Chrysler control is indeed a Morse control and if it is universal in nature. At least it is worth looking into.

Re: Outboard Controls

Will the Morse control for an I/O work for a Johnson Outboard?
