I have a 1977 70 hp evinrude that runs fine but it is very tight when you try to put into gear and it doesnt shift into gear very smooth.
What can I do to fix this?

Little more info reddog.....do you mean the control is stiff or the gears grind when going into gear?

If the shifter is stiff, check the side for a friction adjustment....might be to tight. How old are the cables? Disconnect the control cables from the engine and see if the control is still stiff. If it is, either the control needs a cleaning and lube, the control cables need replaced or both.

Now if you get a grinding noise when shifting, then you arent' shifting fast enough. You need to snap the engine into gear. This prevents pre-mature wear on the clutch dog and gear lobes.

You can also try shifting manually out on the water. Just disconnect the shift cable and see if the engine will snap into gear easily.

Now if your getting a "thump" when you shift into gear, then the idle is probably set to high.

I have both problems and ewasnt sure if one was related to the other .
I adjusted the friction as loose as it could go and its still alot tighter then I would like it but it works.
The motor makes a gringing noise when I put it into gear like im going to slow but I dont think this is the case.

"Sounds" like the cables may need replaced reddog. As I posted before, disconnect the control cables and see if the control is still stiff.
